Swiss Radio International

Yesterday I posted about Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's Dazzle Ships album from 1983. It seems that OMD had a thing for radio (specifically shortwave) and communication in general. Besides "Radio Prague," other tracks include "Telegraph" "Radio Waves" "Time Zones" and their follow-up album Junk Culture had a track called "Tesla Girls." I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of the title but I would assume it had something to do with early radio pioneer Nikola Tesla. Other songs like "This is Helena" and "ABC Auto-Industry" utilized radio broadcasts within them. The last track on the 2008 reissue of Dazzle Ships is called "Swiss Radio International" and, like "Radio Prague," consists of that station's interval signal. The 14 notes were repeated for about 5 minutes before the start of SWI's broadcast. OMD drummer referred to it as "The Ice Cream Song" because of its similarity to ice cream truck music. Swiss Radio International ceased broadcasting on shortwave in 2004, a disturbing trend brought on by the ease of listening via the internet. A different SRI sticker was posted here.

Radio Prague / Radio Praha

I've been listening to my CDs in alphabetical order over the past few months while making my 50 mile round trip commute to work every day. (No, I don't actually listen to much terrestrial radio anymore...except via podcast.) I'm now in the letter O which includes Scottish post-punk band Orange Juice, California indie-pop band The Orange Peels and UK electronica from Orbital.
Next came Dazzle Ships by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, an experimental synthpop and sound collage album from 1983. The first track is called "Radio Prague" and simply consists of the opening bars of the Communist anthem Forward Left which was used as the interval signal from (what was then) Czechoslovakia's international broadcast station. An interval signal is just a short musical call sign indicating that a station's broadcast is about to begin.
Here's the track set to some eastern bloc imagery sure to cause cold war flashbacks.

Radio Prague began broadcasting in 1936 and has programming on satellite and internet in six different languages. They ceased most shortwave broadcasts in 2011 although they can still be heard in North America via Radio Miami International in English and Spanish.

WQLT

WQLT was a Top-40 station licensed to Florence, Alabama.

"Q107" is now an Adult Contemporary station playing "Great Classics and the Best of Today."

WQLT was originally owned by Florence native Sam Phillips who recorded a young Elvis Presley for his famous Sun Records label. Sam Phillips also recorded Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and B.B. King, along with what many consider to be the first rock and roll record: "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (led by Ike Turner.)
Q107, along with WXFL and WSBM is operated by Big River Broadcasting which is still owned by the Phillips family.

WKRI

WKRI broadcast at 1450 AM out of West Warwick, Rhode Island. I believe they carried a MOR format when the anniversary sticker was current and played Country music by the time of the bottom decal. 1450 AM is now WLKW, an ESPN Radio affiliate.

WEGR / WOTO

A dual sticker featuring the long-time walrus mascot of Rock 103 along with the now-defunct WOTO. "Oldies 95.7" was on the air in Memphis from 1999 to 2002 and is currently a Gospel station "Hallelujah 95.7" WHAL.

KXLE

KLJZ is a Hot Adult Contemporary station located in Yuma, Arizona.

WGTZ ((W)Great Trails(Z) Broadcasting--a former owner) was a Top-40 station in Dayton, Ohio from 1984 until 2007. They were licensed to Eaton, OH and had one of the greatest top-of-the-hour IDs in radio history: "WGTZ Eaton Dayton and Springfield Alive!" WGTZ is currently a Variety Hits station known as "Fly 92.9," a nod to Dayton's aviation heritage.

WIZM is a Top-40 station licensed to La Crosse, Wisconsin.

KAMZ was a Top-40 station in El Paso, Texas circa 1985. 93.1 FM is currently a Hot AC station "Kiss FM" KSII.

Super Bowl XLVI

America's most-watched sporting event of the year takes place later today as the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. It's a rematch of the Super Bowl from 2008 when the Giants defeated the Pats to ruin their run at a perfect 19-0 season. As a Buffalo Bills fan for over 25 years, and despite what happened in Super Bowl XXV, I'll be rooting hard for the Giants to destroy the hated Patriots. New England shares the same division with the Bills, plays them twice a year, and has dominated Buffalo for most of the past decade. (Who hasn't dominated the Bills for the past decade?) I despise Tom Brady. I loathe Bill Belichick. I detest Robert Kraft. GO GIANTS!!

WBCN was a Rock station in Boston, Massachusetts for over 40 years and the flagship station of the New England Patriots Radio Network (now at WBZ-FM.) Prior to 1968, they were an Easy Listening station and before that had a Classical format (their call letters stood for (W)Boston Concert Network.) WBCN lives on as a digital-only HD-2 station. Their old frequency is now Hot Adult Contemporary WBMX "Hot 104.1"
I found this decal at the post office where I work. It was stuck to the back of a reusable rolling mail container which had obviously been in the Boston area at one point. So I pulled it off and stuck it to some thin poster board and added one more sticker to the collection.

WFAN is a Sports station in New York City and the flagship of the New York Giants Radio Network. WFAN became the world's first 24 hour all-sports station in 1987 when they were located at 1050 AM. After moving to 660 AM and with the addition of Don Imus in morning drive, the ratings for WFAN jumped considerably. They were the number one billing station in the US in the 1990s and the model for sports stations across the country.

Dart on Map - WJDQ

Every so I often I throw a virtual dart at a map of the United States and post a sticker from the nearest radio station that I have a sticker from. The dart this time landed in a scrubby field just a few feet from the Mississippi/Alabama border. (click to enlarge)

"Q101" WJDQ was a CHR station licensed to Meridian, Mississippi, about 20 miles northeast of where the dart landed. The WJDQ call letters have since moved from 101.3 FM to 95.1 FM where they are now known as "95Q."

Radio Sticker of the Day Mailbag - KWEY

Yesterday I received a fantastic batch of stickers from K.M. Richards in California. They're all vintage mid-80s decals including some "mystery stickers" of unknown origin as well as this oddly-shaped beauty from KWEY in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

AM 1590 KWEY is a Country station now known as "The Coyote." They simulcast their 1000-watt signal on KWEY-FM located at 95.5

KFBK

1530 AM KFBK is a News/Talk station in Sacramento, California. They celebrated their 90th birthday today, having gone on the air on February 2, 1922. A KFBK museum can be found on their website featuring audio clips, photographs and details about a time capsule that was placed behind a wall in 1990 and opened today.

WJRZ

At the time this sticker was current (around 2006) WJRZ was a Classic Hits station licensed to Manahawkin, New Jersey. They flipped to Adult Contemporary in 2009 as "Magic 100.9"

This acid-washed denim jacket dates back to when WJRZ was a Top-40 station. All I would need are some mirrored sunglasses, Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet"-era hair and some original Air Jordans to complete the Jersey Shore-circa-1987 look. The station's shark logo is embossed right into the denim. (click it to enlarge) It's actually kinda cool and fits perfectly but I've never worn it in public. Maybe later today....

KQBZ

KQBZ "100.7 The Buzz" was a "Hot Talk" station aimed primarily at a male audience. They were on the air in Seattle, Washington from 1999 to 2005. 100.7 FM is currently KKWF "The Wolf" airing a Country format.
Former syndicated talk show host Tom Leykis did afternoons on "The Buzz" from his Los Angeles home base of KLSX. When callers became tiresome or unwanted, Leykis used to "blow them up" by playing an explosion sound effect while he hung up on them. After awhile, callers simply said "Blow Me Up Tom" when they knew they were about to get kicked off the air. The catchphrase was also the last words spoken on his show before KLSX flipped from Talk to CHR in 2009. The Tom Leykis Show is set to return as a podcast on April 2, 2012 according to his website.

KIKN

KIKN was a Country music station licensed to Port Angeles, Washington. They went off the air in 2006 after Salem Communications, who bought the station in 2002, boosted sister station 1300 AM KKOL to 50,000 watts necessitating that 1290 go silent.

Radio Board Game - WBT

I first read about this radio-themed board game dating from the 1920s over at Jose Fritz's excellent Arcane Radio Trivia blog. Two to four players each start at a different "Tune In" station in the northern part of their time zone and try to be the first to get to the "Sign Off" station which is WFAA in Dallas, Texas...although it appears way south of Dallas on the map. Click it to enlarge. The blue routes are shorter but filled with danger (Static! Antenna Down! Poor Reception!) and the red routes are longer but easier going.
Of the 40 stations shown on the board, 12 still exist on the AM dial with the same call letters. (Two others--KFJM-Grand Forks, North Dakota and KFKX-Hastings, Nebraska are now on FM instead of AM. KOB in Albuquerque, New Mexico is still around too although their calls are now KKOB.) I have stickers from 10 of the 12:

1110 AM WBT is a 50,000-watt, clear-channel News/Talk station that went on the air in 1922. The call letters were assigned by the Department of Commerce but unofficially stood for Watch Buicks Travel after the original owners sold it to a local Buick dealer. Much of their programming is locally produced including Keith Larson's show on weekdays from 9am to noon.

LAMA! is a greeting of sorts or verbal "high five" between Larson and his "self-selecting" club of listeners. When asked what it means he apparently dodges the question but the audio drop he uses is taken from Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack. (At the :55 second mark.)

KMYI

Squirrel Appreciation Day

Two days ago I somehow forgot to acknowledge Squirrel Appreciation Day which is celebrated every January 21st. S.A.D. was started by animal rehabilitator Christy Hargrove who is affiliated with the Western North Carolina Nature Center.
The only thing I've ever appreciated about a squirrel was the brief entertainment value it provided when I saw it fall out of a very tall sycamore tree. It hit the ground and was stunned for a few seconds before scurrying off. Then there was the time a squirrel got trapped in a supposedly squirrel-proof bird feeder and died. It had to be removed before it stiffened up. I didn't appreciate that at all.

1240 WSQL plays hits from the 1950s through 1990s and is located in Brevard, North Carolina. It is an increasingly rare breed--a music-based AM with lots of local content broadcasting live from a window overlooking Main Street.

The station call letters and mascot are a reference to Brevard's large population of white squirrels. Over 1/4 of all squirrels in town are a white variant of the Eastern Grey Squirrel (not albino as I would have thought) and a 1986 city ordinance established the entire city limits as a squirrel sanctuary.

European Music Radio

A crappy photograph of an oversized paper sticker from European Music Radio. An unlicensed, pirate broadcaster, EMR began regular shortwave transmissions in 1977 from "somewhere in Europe." After being raided by the authorities in 1980, EMR moved their broadcasts from the UK to the Netherlands until 1983 when they went off the air. They returned in '86 for a brief time only to go silent again until 1996. In 2002 they became a legal broadcaster using facilities in Milan, Italy and later originating from Latvia. EMR most recently was based in Germany. This short video aircheck reveals their continued broadcasting as of November, 2011.

The Tubes - WRIF

The Tubes are one of my favorite bands of all time. They've been around since the early 1970s but I first discovered them as a kid after checking out a cassette copy of their excellent 1979 television concept album Remote Control from the local library. Their music is a blend of top-notch musicianship, over-the-top theatricality, a wicked sense of humor and just great songs. They are probably best known for the Top-10 song "She's A Beauty" from the Outside Inside album but one of my favorites is the super funky "Tip of My Tongue" from that same record. Check out those horns!

This is one of dozens if not hundreds of band stickers from WRIF in Detroit. The Tubes logo dates it to 1981 when they released the awesome Completion Backwards Principle album featuring the killer "Talk To Ya Later." Crank it up!

WOR

WOR has been broadcasting from New York, New York since 1922. In 1927 they moved from 740 AM to 710 AM and that same year became a charter member of the CBS Radio Network. In the early 1940s their city-of-license changed from Newark, New Jersey to New York City. For much of its existence WOR was a Full Service station including talk shows, music and 15 minutes of news at the top of every hour. By the mid-1980s the music was gone and they were almost exclusively a Talk station. The station with New York City's only three letter call sign is now a News/Talk station airing mostly conservative talk shows including Lou Dobbs and Michael Savage.

980 AM KFWB was put on the air in Los Angeles, California in 1925 by Sam Warner, the founder of Warner Brothers Studios. However, the "WB" in the call letters did not stand for Warner Brothers as some think--the Department of Commerce assigned the calls sequentially at the same time as KFWA in Ogden, Utah and KFWC in San Bernardino, California. KFWB was an all-News station from 1968 until 2009 when they converted to their current News/Talk format.

The KFWB call letters can be heard signing off in this cartoon produced by Warner Brothers in 1940. It appears at around the 5:25 mark.

The Many Lives of CKRA

CKRA went on the air in Edmonton, Alberta in 1979 with an Album-Oriented Rock format.

Sometime in the 1980s they switched to Adult Contemporary as "96 K-Lite" and/or "K-Lite 96."

In 1995 they became "Mix 96" with a Hot Adult Contemporary format.

In 2003 CKRA trotted out a CHR format known as "96X."

The Country-formatted "Big Earl" came along in 2005 and lasted until 2008.

As of this second, CKRA is an Oldies/Classic Hits station known as "96.3 Capital FM" whose logo can be seen on their website.

WMPS

A 1981 sticker from WMPS (W Memphis Press-Scimitar, a local newspaper and early owner) in Memphis, Tennessee. WMPS carried a Country format from 1978 to 1983.
Prior to this they were a Top-40 station whose alumni included Rick Dees. Dees pioneered the radio morning show with its mix of music, news, talk and comedy with his "Cast of Idiots." In 1976, his awful song "Disco Duck" hit #1 and sold more than six million copies although he wasn't allowed to play it on his own show due to a "conflict of interest." Dees soon bailed to crosstown rival WHBQ before hitting the road to Los Angeles and a 22 year run at KIIS-FM.

I always look forward to getting stickers in the repurposed CKNW envelope from Dan in British Columbia. Dan and I have probably been trading radio stickers for about 10 years...although lately I have been on the receiving end more than the giving. It only took a week and a half to arrive which means that customs must not have gotten involved this time. Among other goodies sent was this 1979 beauty from Montreal, Quebec's CKAC.

730 AM CKAC became the first French-language radio station in the world when it went on the air in 1922. Since 2007 they had been a Sports station but switched to a Traffic Information format known as "Radio Circulation" in September, 2011.

A nice holiday-themed sticker from KENZ in Salt Lake City, Utah. "101.9 The End" got their name because they used to be located at the far end of the dial at 107.5 FM. The Alternative Rock station moved to 101.9 FM in 2005. KENZ is licensed to Ogden, UT.

From 1984, one of my favorite new-waveish Christmas tunes.

Maybe it's because I work for the United States Postal Service but I love mail. Which makes it nice that my little hobby is dependent on mail received from radio stations, fellow sticker collectors and readers of this blog. You never know what's going to be in that box when you open it up. Today I received two stickers via registered letter from a fellow in Venezuela who also collects radio decals. Thanks for sending them! I'll be mailing you some in return very soon.

I could find no information about Radio Internacional other than that it is/was from Venezuela. Maybe the person who sent it could offer some background about this station?

Indiana Day

On this date in 1816 statehood was granted to Indiana by Congress and they became the 19th US state. Indiana Day will be celebrated by public schoolchildren (presumably tomorrow since it's Sunday) and the general Hoosier population on the occasion of the state's 195th birthday.

An Indiana-shaped sticker from WFBQ in Indianapolis. "Q95" has been a Rock station since 1974, first with the automated "TM Stereo Rock" format, then using live and local jocks starting in 1978. The most powerful FM signal in the state is the flagship station of The Bob & Tom Show which is syndicated to about 150 stations nationwide.

Specialty programs in the evening and weekends include Native American music, Blues, Electronica, Funk and Reggae. Eugene's first FM station went on the air in 1947 with two purposes: (1) To serve as a training ground for people looking to get qualified for technical and programming jobs and (2) To transmit educational programs to the city's public schools. Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (Central German Broadcasting aka MDR) is a public radio and television broadcaster based in Leipzig, Germany. They operate six TV channels and eight radio outlets including MDR1 Radio Sachsen (Radio Saxony.) MDR also has their own symphony orchestra, radio choir and ballet.

This headphone-clad white lion must be Radio Sachsen's mascot as he also appears on the t-shirt above.

A 1989 sticker from CFFX "The Fox" in Kingston, Ontario. The CFFX call letters existed from 1987 to 2007 starting as an Adult Contemporary/Gold station and later switching to Oldies. After getting approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, CFFX moved from 960 AM to 104.3 FM in the summer of 2007 and became Adult Contemporary "Light 104.3" that fall. (Currently Classic Hits CKWS.) The migration of Canadian stations from AM to FM has become routine in the past few years. In fact, the Kingston market has exactly zero stations currently broadcasting on the AM dial.

"Sunny 1100" WGPA (W Globe Publishing Authority--the original owner) plays a mixture of Oldies, Polka and Talk shows in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This 250-watt daytime-only station first went on the air in 1947.

Jack FMs play a mixture of hits from the 1960s through the 1990s along with a few current songs. They promote themselves as having a larger and more varied playlist than other music formats and often use the slogan "playing what we want" and are sometimes compared to an iPod set on shuffle. The success of these stations in the mid-2000s caused dozens of others to flip to Jack FM or other similarly formatted "named" stations like Ben, Doug, Abe, Joe and Frank. KFUO (Keep Forward Upward Onward) is a Religious station licensed to Clayton, Missouri near St. Louis. They went on the air in 1924 and their radio studio is the longest running broadcast facility in the United States.

99.1 KFUO went on the air in 1948 and was the first FM station in St. Louis. In July, 2010, after 62 years as a Classical music station, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod sold KFUO-FM to Gateway Creative Broadcasting who flipped 99.1 to Contemporary Christian KLJY "Joy FM." Some former KFUO-FM staff members are now involved with the new internet home of "Classic 99."
