Edmonton Alberta's first radio station, AM 930 CJCA was established 90 years ago today. They currently carry a Contemporary Christian station known as "The Light."
This 1993 CBC news clip reports that CJCA would be going off the air. They resumed broadcasting under new ownership on April 3, 1994.
I received another very generous stack of stickers from Dan Sys in British Columbia yesterday. My favorite of the bunch features a maraca shaking cactus from a station that plays "music to your liking." Muchas gracias, Dan!
1510 AM KSTV is a Spanish Variety station licensed to Stephenville, Texas.
WQLV plays a "blend of classic and current Top-40 music" for central Pennsylvania. Looking at their website, it appears that they've dropped the "Love 99" branding that was in use when this sticker came out in 2000. WQLV is licensed to Millersburg, PA.
100.9 "K-Rock" WKRL is a Modern Rock station licensed to North Syracuse, New York. They now also simulcast on 106.5 WKRH licensed to Minetto, NY and 94.9 WKLL licensed to Frankfort, NY.
"100.9 The Eagle" was a Country station licensed to Pana, Illinois. In 2001 100.9 FM changed their city of license to Macon, IL and is currently WZUS "The Talk of Decatur."
The 1982 Broadcasting Yearbook lists KXLS as having an MOR format and was licensed to Alva, Oklahoma. The sticker's border, palm trees and drop shadow on the call letters actually have a mirrored chrome look which can't be duplicated by my scanner. Inside the black circle at the top of the triangle are the letters ZBC which stood for the now-defunct Zumma Broadcasting Co. (you can almost see it if you click on the sticker.)
Český Rozhlas (Czech Radio) is the publicly funded radio network of the Czech Republic based in Prague. They went on the air in 1923 making Czechoslovakia only the second country (after England) to make regular broadcasts in Europe.
WWKB was an Oldies station in Buffalo, New York from 2003 to 2006. This was a short-lived attempt to recreate the personality-driven music format from 1520 AM's Top-40 past when they were known as WKBW. WWKB is currentlly a Progressive Talk station. Stickers from a previous Sports format circa the late 1990s can be seen here.
WVRV "97.5 The River" is a Contemporary Christian station licensed to Pine Level, Alabama. They also broadcast at 101.5 FM on translator W268BH licensed to Montgomery, AL.
"News Radio WORD" is a trimulcast of 106.3 FM WYRD licensed to Simpsonville, South Carolina, 1330 AM WYRD licensed to Greenville, SC and 950 AM WORD licensed to Spartanburg, SC.
For almost a quarter century, Simpsons creator Matt Groening has kept the location of the show a secret. The family lives in Springfield but it was never revealed which state it was in. (There are 13 cities, 11 towns and 14 townships in the United States named Springfield.) In an interview with Smithsonian magazine, Groening said that the fictional town was named after Springfield, Oregon.
1050 AM KORE is a Religious station licensed to Springfield-Eugene, Oregon and a sure favorite of Ned Flanders.
Harry Chapin's "W*O*L*D" tells the rather depressing story of a middle-aged radio disc-jockey who drifts from job to job only to discover that his life, looks and voice have passed him by. The song was inspired by Jim Connors, a DJ at WMEX in Boston who is credited with discovering the singer and helping his earlier song "Taxi" become a hit. When performing live, Chapin often changed the call letters in the lyrics near the end of the song to fit a local station. The version below was recorded in Los Angeles where he changed it to "KHJ". In the last performance before his death in July, 1981 he changed it to "WKRP" (even though the concert was in Canada.) "W*O*L*D was a major inspiration for Hugh Wilson when creating the hit television series "WKRP in Cincinnati."
Twelve years before Chapin's "W*O*L*D" became a hit in 1974, an actual station from Marion, Virginia with the WOLD call letters signed on the air. It's unclear what year this sticker is from; a randomly chosen Broadcast Yearbook (1980) lists the AM as being Modern Country and the FM as Adult Contemporary. The pots of gold suggest they might have been a (Golden) Oldies station at one time or maybe it's a play on the call letters. 1330 AM is currently WITM and carries a Religious format while 102.5 FM is a Classic Rock station known as "The Renegade."
A sticker and magnet from Adult Contemporary WCRZ "Cars 108" in Flint, Michigan. 107.9 FM went on the air in 1961 as WGMZ with an MOR/Easy Listening format. They became WCRZ in 1984.
