I like maps. Always have. My teenage bedroom wall wasn't filled with rock band posters or sports pennants but instead with maps from National Geographic magazine and a hammer & sickle flag from the Soviet Union. I guess I was a cartograpic nerd. Later I spent two years as a Geography major in college but bailed out when things got too academically challenging. I just couldn't muster any interest in the Origins and Concentration of Dairy Farms in Wisconsin or studies on the Social and Environmental Effects of Deforestation on Hispaniola. I was having too much fun at the college radio station so I switched my major to Mass Communications and finally graduated four years later. These stickers and others like them combine two of my favorite things: Radio and Maps.

KVBR is a Talk/Business News station licensed to Brainerd, Minnesota.

KBON is a Cajun/Zydeco/Americana station licensed to Mamou, Louisiana.

SOS Radio / KCIR

KCIR is a Contemporary Christian/Religious Teaching station licensed to Twin Falls, Idaho. It is one of almost 40 stations and translators in the SOS Radio Network.

Dart on Map - WSPA

Today's dart landed just east of Landrum, South Carolina. In fact, it landed very close to Hogback Mountain which is where the transmitter tower for "Magic 98.9" WSPA (WSPArtanburg) is located. WSPA is a Light Rock/Adult Contemporary station licensed to Spartanburg. It was the first FM station in the state of South Carolina, having gone on the air in 1946, and in 1960 it became the first in the state to broadcast in (((stereo))).

WNAW

AM 1230 WNAW (W North Adams Williamstown) is a Country station licensed to North Adams, Massachusetts.  They've been on the air since November 1947.

National Joe Day - CKNG

Today is another useless novelty "holiday" where everyone can feel free to call themselves and others "Joe." I'm now firmly convinced that this place is simply making crap up in order to get content for their website.

CKNG "Joe FM" was a Classic Hits station from Edmonton, Alberta.

RKOR

RKOR was (is?) a Contemporary music station located in Granollers, Spain. They have no official website and I'm pretty sure they are no longer in operation. I did find a YouTube clip with a few RKOR jingles though. The guitar on the sticker is in the shape of Catalonia which is an autonomous region within Spain where Granollers (as well as Barcelona) is located. The red and yellow stripes resemble the Catalonian flag.

KAJZ

KAJZ was a Snooze Smooth Jazz station licensed to Killeen, Texas from 1996 to 1998. They then switched to Country as "Lonestar 93" even though there were already four other stations with that format in the Austin market. Currently, this frequency hosts KDHT "Hot 93.3" a Rhythmic-CHR outlet whose COL moved to Cedar Park, Texas.

Two TUEs for Tuesday

A Spanish Contemporary Christian station from Tulia, Texas (although it's unlikely that was the format when this minimalist, 1970s-era sticker was issued.) Still licensed but currently off the air.

WTUE is a Classic Rock station from Dayton, Ohio. They got their call letters to complement sister station WONE (1 and 2...isn't that clever!? Apparently WTWO wasn't available.) Former ESPN personality Dan Patrick got his broadcasting career started here as a DJ back in 1979. WTUE has been a Rock station since 1976 after switching from Top 40.

Thunder & Lightning

WDNB "Thunder 102" is a Country music station licensed to Jeffersonville, New York.


WRLT (W RadioLighTning) is an Adult Album Alternative station serving Nashville, Tennessee and licensed to Franklin, TN.

Sunday Sticker - KCHP

K-Chapel is a 93-watt, low-power FM, Contemporary Christian/Religious Teaching station. KCHP is licensed to Arcata, California and began broadcasting in 2004.

Dart on Map - CKBC

Today's random dart landed near Mount Elizabeth in a largely (entirely?) unpopulated area of New Brunswick, Canada. The nearest station that I have a sticker from is CKBC "MAX 104.9" a CHR outlet which is located about 50 miles east in Bathurst, NB.

WOOL

Commercial-free community radio from Bellows Falls, Vermont. WOOL is a 6-watt, low-power FM station that began broadcasting in 2005.

KZZZ

KZZZ was an Adult Contemporary station in Kingman, Arizona. According to the FCC call sign history page they had the KZZZ call letters for a mere 7 months back in 2000. This frequency is now Country KFLG although now licensed to Big River California. Or maybe my records are wrong about Kingman being the city of license. Perhaps it's Bullhead City, AZ...wait, that's the current KZZZ at 1490 AM. This is all so confusing.....

WQIO

Adult Contemporary from Mount Vernon, Ohio. WQIO is now known as Eagle 93.7 running ABC Radio Network's syndicated Today's Hits and Yesterday's Favorites format.

KBVR

College radio from Oregon State University in Corvallis. KBVR (KBeaVeR-the school's mascot) has been broadcasting since 1967.

WWUZ

Classic Rock for Fredericksburg, Virginia. WWUZ is licensed to Bowling Green, VA.

KSTT

KSTT was a Davenport, Iowa Top-40 station starting in the 1950s up until the mid-1980s. They then switched calls to KKZX but two years later went back to KSTT as an Oldies station. In the late 80s they were simulcasting Rock with their sister station WXLP and by the early 90s flipped to Sports as KJOC. They then switched to a Talk format while still broadcasting local and Chicago area sports. In 2008 they adopted ABC Radio Networks' syndicated "True Oldies Channel." This sticker is circa 1981.

Dart on Map - KKDV

Boy am I stoopid. I just realized that I can customize an area for my dart to land. Prior to this I had been throwing at all of North America which includes huge chunks of sparsely populated northern Canada and Alaska as well as vast swaths of the Pacific Ocean. It would sometimes take a dozen throws before landing anywhere near where a radio station might be. Now I can hone in on the United States and part of Canada exclusively (sorry Hawaii and Nunavut.)


Anyway....today's dart landed in Mount Diablo State Park about 30 miles east of San Francisco.
KKDV (KK Diablo Valley) is an Adult Contemporary station licensed to Walnut Creek, California just west of Mount Diablo which is nicely portrayed on the sticker.

Buzzard Day

Today is Buzzard Day in Hinckley Township, Ohio just south of Cleveland. Every year on March 15th flocks of buzzards (aka turkey vultures) return from their winter hiatus to roost in the ledges of Cleveland Metropark’s Hinckley Reservation. Visitors have been witnessing the return of these birds since the first Buzzard Sunday in 1957.

In 1968, Cleveland's WHK-FM stopped simulcasting the Top-40 of their AM sister station, switched to Progressive Rock and changed calls to WMMS (W MetroMedia Stereo--in reference to their owner at the time.) The next year saw brief flirtations with Adult Standards and another switch back to Top-40 but by the early 70s WMMS was once again a Rock station and has remained so to this day.
In 1974 the station started using a cartoon buzzard as its logo. During the glory years of WMMS, from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, they were at or near the top of the ratings and the buzzard became synonymous with rock and roll in Cleveland. According to former program director John Gorman (a co-creator of the logo) the choice of the buzzard as the WMMS mascot had nothing to do with the annual Buzzard Day in Hinckley and that they didn’t know there was such an event until a listener told them. They did however become a sponsor of the event in 1976 with disastrous results as thousands of long haired rockers descended on the park like a mini-Woodstock. The next year the station was asked not to mention Buzzard Day on the air and local elementary school children were not allowed to draw the WMMS logo for their annual assignment of drawing a buzzard.
Sadly, in 2007 the Clear Channel-owned WMMS dropped the buzzard mascot. Or, in the words of one of their programmers, “de-emphasized” the icon (their current logo still has orange wings on either side of the call letters and frequency.)

UPDATE: As of December, 2011 the WMMS website once again features the buzzard mascot (wearing a Cleveland Browns helmet.)

Sunday Sticker - KCCS

Two stickers from KCCS in Salem, Oregon. They were a Contemporary Christian music station but are now Religious Talk using the call letters KPJC.

WNYX

WNYX was the fictional New York City station on NBC's sitcom "NewsRadio" which ran from 1995 to 1999. Someone is apparently such a fan that he is selling all kinds of WNYX merch including these stickers. Buy them here like I did.

CFAK

KISS

The station that actually has KISS as its call letters. Operated by Cox Radio and licensed to San Antonio, Texas (ironically also the headquarters of "KISS FM" brand name owners Clear Channel Communications.) KISS has an Active Rock format.
