BOO! Happy Halloween!

90.7 FM KBOO is a "Volunteer-Powered, Non-Commercial, Listener-Sponsored, Full-Strength Community Radio for Portland, Oregon, Cascadia & the World!" They went on the air in 1968 and were named after a strain of marijuana known as "Berkeley Boo."

WSQV

A 1985 Broadcasting Yearbook lists WSQV as being from Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania and having a "CHR Top Tracks" format. 97.7 FM is currently hit music "V97" WVRT now licensed to nearby Mill Hall, PA. The WSQV calls are still in the area as "The Valley's Best Rock" licensed to Lock Haven, PA.

WMPH

WMPH is a 100 watt radio station broadcasting from (W) Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, Delaware. They went on the air in 1969 and play a mix of Jazz, Alternative and Classic Rock along with district and community programming.

WHJJ

920 AM WHJJ carries a News/Talk format in Providence, Rhode Island. They are the flagship station of the Pawtucket Red Sox who are the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

WBMZ

WBMZ "103.7 The Boomer" is a Classic Hits station licensed to Metter, Georgia.

KSTP-AM

1500 AM KSTP was a Rock/Top-40 station licensed to (K) ST. Paul, Minnesota. They began broadcasting back in 1928 and was a longtime full-service MOR station until switching to contemporary hits in 1973 as "The Music Station." KSTP later switched to News/Talk and is currently the ESPN Radio affiliate for Minneapolis/St. Paul and the flagship station of the Minnesota Twins.

KMIT

KMIT is a Country music station from (K) MITchell, South Dakota.

KDHT

KDHT "Hot 93.3" was a Hip-Hop/R&B station licensed to Cedar Park, Texas from 2003 to 2009. 93.3 FM is currently Adult Album Alternative KGSR.

CFAX

Victoria, British Columbia's CFAX signed on the air in 1959 at 810 on the AM dial as "your good music station." In 1963 they moved to their current position at 1070 AM. CFAX is currently a News/Talk station.

5AA

5AA began broadcasting at 1390 AM in Adelaide, Australia in 1976. Two years later they moved to 1386 AM and currently reside at 1395 AM. 5AA (now identified as "FIVEaa") is a Talk station including news, sports, social issues and gardening.

IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!...again, Part II

Back in May the delusional preacher Harold Camping predicted the world would end. When that didn't happen and he tried to explain his way out he then claimed that the end would come today, October 21, 2011. Lately though, Camping has been hedging his doomsday bet by saying the world will "probably" end today. While we wait for Harold's next non-event to take place, here's a sticker from the Camping-owned Family Radio.

Oakland, California-based Family Radio operates about 160 stations and translators across the country. WYFR is their shortwave station based in Okeechobee, Florida. Sadly, it broadcasts crazytalk throughout the world in 43 languages.

Arrow Classic Rock

Arrow Classic Rock has been broadcasting throughout The Netherlands since 1996. They also sponsored the Arrow Rock Festival from 2003 to 2008 bringing dozens of classic rock bands to the country. Recent financial troubles caused them to declare bankruptcy and they now broadcast jockless on 828 AM and an internet stream. Arrow Classic Rock is based in The Hague, Netherlands.

"Spirit 105.9" KFMK is Contemporary Christian station licensed to Round Rock, Texas near Austin.

WBOP

WBOP was an R&B station in Pensacola, Florida from 1958 to 1990. 980 AM is currently an Urban AC station WRNE "The Touch" licensed to Gulf Breeze, FL

Boss's Day

Today, all across America, employees are celebrating Boss's Day by pretending to appreciate their workplace superiors by giving them a gift card or a mug. Boss's Day was started in 1958 by an insurance company secretary in Illinois. By 1979 Hallmark had made the holiday semi-official by starting to offer Boss's Day cards. I didn't realize what day it was until after coming home from work. Sorry boss.

WBSS was a CHR station licensed to Millville, New Jersey near Atlantic City. 97.3 FM is currently an ESPN Radio affiliate WENJ.

"The Boss 97 FM" WDBS is a Country station licensed to Sutton, West Virginia.

The Fans

KKFN "AM 950 The Fan" was a Sports station in Denver, Colorado from 1994 til 2008. They were the flagship station of the National Hockey League's Colorado Avalanche. AM 950 is currently "Cruisin' Oldies" KRWZ.

WBNS is a Sports station and ESPN Radio affiliate from Columbus, Ohio. They are the flagship station of the Ohio State Buckeyes radio network. "1460 The Fan" is one of five remaining stations in the United States to broadcast from a diamond-shaped Blaw-Knox tower.

"1480 The Fan" WRDW was a (what else?!) Sports station licensed to Augusta, Georgia. 1480 AM is currently a Spanish broadcaster known as "¡El Puente!"

KDKB

KDKB is a Rock station licensed to Mesa, Arizona. A former WEBN employee and his friend used some trust fund money to buy the station and flipped it from Easy Listening to freeform rock in 1971. They took much of the staff of another early Rock station in Phoenix--KCAC--and quickly overtook their competition, helped by simulcasting the signal on an AM sister station as many radios at the time couldn't tune in FM. KDKB celebrated their 40th anniversary this past August.

WNMU

WNMU is a National Public Radio affiliate owned by Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Programming is made up largely of Jazz and Classical music along with NPR staples Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

WRKR

WRKR is a Rock station licensed to Portage, Michigan.

WLLR

WLLR is a Country station licensed to Davenport, Iowa.

College Radio Day - KDVS

Today is the first College Radio Day which is being celebrated by more than 350 college and high school stations across the United States and Canada (and Jamaica!) The goal of College Radio Day is to "harness the combined listenership of hundreds of thousands of college radio listeners throughout North America and to celebrate the important contribution of college radio to America's airwaves by uniting for this one day."




KDVS is one of the participating stations in this year's College Radio Day. They're a Freeform station broadcasting from the University of California, Davis. KDVS has been a seemingly endless source of wonderfully oddball stickers over the years, many of them featuring the turntable-brained robot head which must be the station mascot.  Many more KDVS stickers can be seen here.

KRQR

KRQR was a Rock station in San Francisco, California from 1982 to 1993. 97.3 FM is currently an Adult Top-40 outlet "Alice @97.3" KLLC.

WFVA

WFVA is an Adult Standards station from (W) Fredericksburg, VirginiA.

WACF

WACF was a Variety Rock station licensed to Young Harris, Georgia. Due to the poor economy and "owing to the licensee’s financial concerns,” the station went silent last April. A new owner was found and this past August they were apparently up and running and playing older country music although an official station website could not be found.

The KGB Chicken

In 1974 a young Ted Giannoulas was hired by KGB-FM in San Diego to wear a chicken suit and give out Easter eggs at a local zoo. Over 35 years later, The Famous Chicken (aka The San Diego Chicken) is still entertaining crowds and is probably the best known and best loved mascot in sports history.

After the original gig at the zoo was up, Giannoulas offered to attend San Diego Padre games dressed in the chicken suit as an ambassador for the station. KGB agreed and for five years he dutifully attended ballgames along with various station events as The KGB Chicken.

A fallout between KGB and Giannoulas resulted in his firing and the station went to court to block him from working in a chicken costume. The California Supreme Court ruled in Giannoulas' favor and he was free to work as he pleased. In 1979, The San Diego Chicken was triumphantly hatched in front of 47,000 people at Jack Murphy Stadium complete with police escort.



The Famous Chicken has now made over 17,000 appearances and performed at over 8,500 sporting events (including more than 520 San Diego Padre games in a row.) I saw his antics myself at a Buffalo Bisons/Indianapolis Indians game a few years ago. Here he is questioning an umpire's vision.

KGB (K George Bowles--station manager of KGB-AM from 1928 to 1931) is a Classic Rock station licensed to San Diego, California. They've carried a Rock format since the early 1970s.

Around the time the KGB Chicken first started there was also a KGB-AM. A 1974 Broadcasting Yearbook lists their format as "Contemporary" although when they were known as "13K" they were Top-40. 1360 AM is currently "Xtra Sports" KLSD.
