730 AM WPAL was the first radio station in Charleston, South Carolina to aim their programming toward an African-American audience. They were also indispensable during 1989's Hurricane Hugo as they were the only media outlet still operating during the storm. Read about it here.
WPAL was an awesome presence in Charleston. Primarily an R & B station, there was a heavy dose of Gospel, Blues, and a some Caribbean music as well.
ReplyDeleteThe talk shows were very informative for the Black community with topics and features not covered by mainstream media. There were call-in shows where listeners could ask questions and/or make comments. The daily news spots always put a different spin on the news... a spin that was more relevant to their listeners.
Many youngsters learned about radio operations at WPAL. The station definitely had a "serve the community" attitude... I wish we, the community, had better served WPAL.
