CKON
97.3 FM CKON went on the air in 1984 from the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne which is located in parts of Ontario, Quebec and New York State. The call letters refer to "sekon" the traditional Mohawk greeting for "hello." They reportedly operate with 3,000-watts of power but it's not known for sure because CKON is not officially licensed by either the Federal Communications Commission or the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. The building housing CKON's studios is located in both the United States and Canada and was deliberately built on the border as a symbol of Mohawk defiance and community unity. Listening live while making this post I heard "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" by Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson--a seemingly perfect choice for an "Indian"-operated station to play.
