Today's stop was in Skagway, a one-time boomtown due to the Klondike Gold Rush. We got off the ship and was met by our tour operator who gave us the bad news that weather wouldn't permit us to helicopter to the glacier for dog sledding but we would be able to fly on to another glacier at a lower elevation. Sounds good! Off we went with our spiked boots and trekking poles for an unbelievable experience.
A "glacial facial." The guide told us the crunchy ice was sharp enough to cut to the bone so she put two rocks down to lean on. The water tasted great and was cold (obviously) and clean despite the dirty glacier around it.
Later we walked around Skagway and got the obligatory post office photo. Another great day in the books.90.3 FM KNBA airs public radio programming along with Adult Album Alternative music in Anchorage, Alaska.
There's actually an NPR station nearby, for which Skagway has a translator. KHNS/Haines, has a translator in Skagway, on 91.9 located right near the docks.
ReplyDeleteDid you all get to ride the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad? That was sooo much fun!
I took a snapshot of the black and red engine from the White Pass but we didn't ride it. The pictures I've seen looks incredibly scenic though!
ReplyDelete@Greg: They are indeed! It was a nice, slow scenic train ride. It was the best. :)
ReplyDeleteI did the Inside Passage (Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka) out of Seattle on a Royal Caribbean (second one of the year) back in September of last year (planned in March when everything opened up, so it was stupid cheap) and pictures and words do not do any part of Alaska justice. It's so amazingly beautiful!
If you make a stop in Juneau, the one place you must check out is House of Russia. They have handmade Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish Matryoshka nesting dolls. All handmade in the most brightest colors. The lady who runs it speaks with a thick Russian-ish accent, but is very sweet. Will talk your ear off, but it's a conversation worth having. Right there on Franklin Street (369 S. Franklin), a block from the docks. Highlight of my trip. :)
We will eventually go back to Alaska to do some things we didn't do this trip (foremostly whale watching and dogsledding.) I have a slight fascination with all things Russian including nesting dolls. House of Russia and the White Pass train sounds like must-dos as well.
