WLUP

Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire for the first time on this date in 1967. He was playing at the Astoria Theatre in London and ended up in the hospital with burned fingers. He repeated the stunt a few months later at the Monterey Pop Festival (with no burns this time.)

Radio Pulce

Radio Pulce (Radio Flea) is based in Florence, Italy. They went on the air in 1990 and appear to play Rock music (a gallery of clsssic rock album covers can be found on their website) along with Italian music from the "Magnificent 8" (Mina, Battisti, Baglioni, Celentano, Venditti, Morandi,
Vanoni and Dalla.)

Radio City

Radio City is a Rock station in Helsinki, Finland. They went on the air in 1985 shortly after the Finnish government began granting licenses to private broadcasters.

WCTZ

WCTZ "96.7 The Coast" was an Adult Contemporary station licensed to Port Chester, New York. The station went silent in May, 2011 before coming back on the air 11 days later as New York City's Christian Contemporary K-LOVE affiliate WKLV.

KFUN

KFUN plays Country and Spanish music in Las Vegas, New Mexico. They began broadcasting on Christmas Day 1941.

WSRS

WSRS (Worcester's Stereo Radio Station) is an Adult Contemporary station in Worcester, Massachusetts.

KCMU

KCMU was an Alternative/Indie/College Rock station broadcasting from the University of Washington in Seattle. They went on the air in 1972 at 90.5 FM with 10 watts of power. By 1986 they had boosted their power to 400 watts and added specialty shows including Hip-Hop, Blues, Reggae and Jazz. They also moved one notch down the dial to 90.3 FM. In 2001 the frequency became KEXP, maintaining the format while partnering with the Experience Music Project.

WAKH "K106" plays Country music in McComb, Mississippi.

WMPW

WMPW "Power 99" was a Rhythmic Contemporary station in Memphis, Tennessee and licensed to Munford, TN. 98.9 FM is currently News/Talk WKIM.

KENZ

KENZ "101.9 The End" is an Alternative station in Salt Lake City, Utah and licensed to Oden, UT. A holiday-themed KENZ sticker can be seen here.

CKEA

CKEA "Lite 95.7" is an Adult Contemporary station in Edmonton, Alberta.

WHJY

WHJY has been a Rock station in Providence, Rhode Island since 1981.

Kiss Radio

Kiss Radio is a network of Contemporary Hit stations in the Czech Republic.

Kiss 90 FM Proton covers the area of western Bohemia.


Kiss 88.3 FM Hády is based in the city of Brno.

104.1 WXTM "Extreme Radio" was an Active Rock station in St. Louis, Missouri from 1998 to 2000 and licensed to Jerseyville, Illinois.
The frequency is currently home to Urban Contemporary WHHL "Hot 104.1" now licensed to Hazelwood, MO.

WBNH

88.5 WBNH is a Religious station licensed to Pekin, Illinois. They signed on the air in December, 1988.

KSTR

KSTR "96.1 K-STAR" is a Classic Rock station licensed to Montrose, Colorado.
That much I know for sure. What's unclear is this KSTR sticker from the mid-1980s.

KSTR-AM was located at 620 AM and licensed to Grand Junction, CO (currently Contemporary Christian KJOL.) The FM half doesn't seem to exist, at least with the KSTR call letters. Both the 1984 and 1985 Broadcasting Yearbooks list 96.1 FM as being KWDE with an "Adult Contemporary, Modern Country" (?!) format.

I can find no evidence of a station having the KSTR calls in the mid-80s (as dated by the coupon expiration.) Judging by the Morning Zoo caricatures the station probably had a CHR format. Maybe there's no relation to the current K-STAR and the vintage KSTR other than having the same call letters and being from the same area. I'm through researching it.

Brain Awareness Week - WMUB

Betcha didn't know that we're in the middle of International Brain Awareness Week. BAW is an "inspirational global campaign that unites those who share an interest in elevating public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain and nervous system research." They also aspire to "improve public health by expanding awareness of neurological disorders" and contribute to thekxfkmzmmmdffffsssszzzzzzzzz.......................sorry, I fell asleep there. Anyway...enjoy your brain everybody!

This brainy sticker is from those smartypants public radio people over at WMUB in Oxford, Ohio. They broadcast at 88.5 FM from Miami University. Budgetary challenges forced WMUB to become part of Cincinnati Public Radio in 2009, ending 59 years of local programming.

KMIX

KMIX was a Country station licensed to Turlock, California circa 1987. 98.3 FM is currently Urban Contemporary KWNN which is a simulcast of sister station KWIN.

KDIF

KDIF "La Diferencia" was a Spanish-language station licensed to Riverside, California. 1440 AM is currently KFNY, broadcasting a Comedy format.

CFBK

The 1985 Broadcasting Yearbook lists Huntsville Ontario's CFBK as having a Middle-of-the-Road format. The station ceased broadcasting on the AM dial at the end of 1987 and currently lives at 105.5 FM as "Muskoka's Lite Favourites."

The District Municipality of Muskoka is located in the central part of the province about two hours north of Toronto. It's referred to as "cottage country" and is dotted with many picturesque villages, lakeside hotels and resorts and sees over 2 million visitors annually (although there are only 50,000 permanent residents.) Celebrities who own retreats in the area include Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Cindy Crawford and Kurt Russell.

Radio Sticker of the Day Mailbag - KSPC

Another bounty of radio stickers, magnets and assorted goodies arrived today courtesy of Dan in British Columbia. The best of the bunch is this headphone kitty decal from KSPC.

88.7 KSPC is a non-commercial, block-formatted campus and community station owned by Pomona College in Claremont, California. Last month KSPC celebrated their 56th year on the air.

I don't think Nu'Chilla enjoyed listening to KSPC via the internet as much as I did.

Radio Manila

Radio Manila broadcasts at 100.8 FM in Turin, Italy. It's unclear whether they still broadcast at 98.5 FM or not.

KROQ

106.7 KROQ is a Modern Rock station in Los Angeles, California. They are one of the longest-running stations carrying an Alternative/Modern Rock format--106.7 started adding new wave and punk to their freeform rock in 1978 and became a full-fledged modern rock station by 1982. KROQ is licensed to Pasadena, CA.
