Sunday Sticker - KFSG

KFSG (named after the International Church of the FourSquare Gospel) was an Adult Contemporary Christian station in Los Angeles, California. KFSG started out at 1080 AM back in the 1920s before ending up at 96.3 FM around 1970. In 2001 KFSG moved again, this time to 93.5 FM where they dropped the music and went to Religious Talk. This lasted until 2003 when they were sold to the Spanish Broadcasting System. 96.3 FM is currently KXOL, a Rhythmic Latin station known as "Latino 96.3."

Lyndon Baines Johnson Day

Lyndon Baines Johnson Day is a legal state holiday in Texas. It occurs every August 27th to commemorate the birthday of the 36th president of the United States. The holiday was created by the Texas State Legislature in 1973, the same year LBJ died at age 64.

KLBJ AM is a News/Talk station. I wonder if Lyndon is rolling in his grave knowing that Rush Limbaugh is spewing forth on a station named after him?

KLBJ FM is a Rock station.

Both stations were at one time owned by the family of Lyndon Baines Johnson. KLBJ AM and FM are licensed to Austin, Texas.

Gene Simmons Turns 60

I was looking at a list of famous people who share my birthday today:
Monty Hall
Sean Connery
Regis Philbin
Rollie Fingers
Rob Halford
Geoff Downes
Elvis Costello
Tim Burton
Billy Ray Cyrus
Claudia Schiffer
and
Gene Simmons from KISS who turns 60. Gene really, really, really, likes money. Did you know that he trademarked the moneybag logo with the dollar sign on it? I thought that image had been used for years and was in the public domain. Apparently he used to turn the S of his last name into a dollar sign when signing autographs. A lawyer said he should copyright the two slashes going through the S which he did. He then got a copyright for the moneybag too.

WRIF is a heritage Rock station in Detroit, Michigan. Previous WRIF stickers can be found here.

KHYI

KHYI is not a typical Country music station and might best be described by their Yahoo! Groups Fan Site:

KHYI 95.3 (www.khyi.com) is the biggest and best Americana station in the world (or at least, Dallas), and it's all about the music. Call it "insurgent country", "No Depression" music, alt.country, or whatever you like... what it ain't is Garth, Shania, Billy Ray, or any of the rest of that NashVegas crap!

This sticker came out around 2002 and they've since changed their branding to "95.3 FM The Range" but they still carry an "Alternative/Outlaw/Classic Country" format with an emphasis on local Texas artists. KHYI is licensed to Howe, Texas and is a rimshot into the Dallas/Ft. Worth market.

WSPD

Former plumber and current colossal blowhard Joe Wurzelbacher might soon have a regular gig at News/Talker WSPD in Toledo, Ohio. Wurzelbacher made his radio debut last Tuesday night on the “Eye On Toledo” program. “There’s a possibility radio and WSPD could be part of his future,” said program director and stunt hiring enthusiast Brian Wilson. “Joe the Plumber” became a household name when he talked on-camera with then-candidate Obama about his small business tax plan during last year’s presidential campaign.

Radio K 107.5

Google didn't offer any information about Radio K but I do know that it's from Vicenza, Italy. The US flag and probable "American Music" format might have something to do with the fact that the United States Army's Camp Ederle is based in Vicenza.

CMJ New Music

I subscribe to a few music magazines--Rolling Stone, Paste, Spin and, until they went belly-up, Blender. I also get CMJ New Music Monthly which I honestly thought had ceased to exist as I hadn't gotten an issue for months. I didn't think anything of it because their timeliness has been spotty for years. When a "new" issue did arrive it was frequently outdated. The latest one which I received in the mail yesterday is dated June 20th and their charts are from the first week of July. It's probably a good idea that they dropped the "Monthly" from their title and just go by "CMJ New Music" now. I always liked CMJ (which stands for College Music Journal and covers indie/"alternative" music) because it came with a sampler CD and has turned me on to countless bands since I started subscribing in 1994. Now the physical disc is gone too and only available as a download. Too bad they didn't offer subscribers a choice between CD and download like Paste did recently. For some reason I still want the compact disc.

96 FM WCMJ has nothing to do with the College Music Journal and wouldn't be caught dead playing Art Brut, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective or any other beloved CMJ band. They're a Contemporary Hit Music station licensed to Cambridge, Ohio.

WHLI

WHLI (We're Hempstead Long Island) is an Adult Standards station licensed to Hempstead, New York. They were a Top-40 station for much of the 1970s but switched to Standards in 1979. This probably attracted some of the station's original listeners from when they went on the air in 1947.

KFJC is the campus station at Foothill College located in Los Altos Hills, California. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary in October of this year.

Cheap Sunglasses

Just as every station known as "Kicks" is required by law to be a Country station, every "Cool" or "Kool" seems to carry an Oldies format. All three of these stations have different owners and are in no way related but somehow ended up with virtually identical logos. I have 59 stickers from "Cool"/"Kool" stations...I would guess about a third of them are sporting these same Wayfarers.

WQQL - Springfield, Illinois

KAMS - Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. Now a Country station "K-Kountry 95."

WQLD - Luverne, Alabama. Now a Gospel station "Hallelujah 104.3" WHLW.

Chiquita Pays KASH to Death Squads

I just caught up with a recent summer re-run of 60 Minutes via podcast. There was an interesting story about the Chiquita banana company and how they paid almost two million dollars in protection money to a murderous paramilitary group in Colombia. Chiquita said the money had to be paid in order to protect the lives of their employees in that country. Essentially, their extortion payments were helping to fund one side of a 40 year war being waged between the paramilitaries and Marxist guerillas--a war in which entire villages were being wiped out and thousands killed. All of this to stay in the banana business.

I ate a banana this morning. Not a Chiquita banana but one grown by Banacol. Whew! No blood on my hands.
Well crap...I just Googled around and apparently Banacol made illegal payments to these murderers as well. Suddenly "The World's Most Perfect Food" doesn't taste so good anymore.

KASH was a 1970s-era Top-40 station in Eugene, Oregon.

WTHU

WTHU went on the air in Thurmont, Maryland on June 12, 1967. An old Broadcasting Yearbook from the 1970s said their format was "Mod Country" while other sites listed them as Adult Standards or Middle-of-the-Road. WTHU is now a Religious station after being sold to the Christian Radio Coalition in 2008.

According to a September 1981 article in the Free-Lance Star from Fredericksburg, Virginia, WEER was a "cross-sectional music station that predominantly featured progressive rock but ranged from blues, jazz and bluegrass to big band music." Sounds interesting....and like something you'd almost never hear from a commercial radio station today. WEER was licensed to Warrenton, VA.

National SCRABBLE® Championship

It's Day 1 of the 2009 National SCRABBLE Championship which is taking place right here in Dayton, Ohio. Last year it was held in Orlando, Florida. Dayton is certainly no Orlando. Sorry about this week's entertainment options SCRABBLE players! Downtown is crawling with quirky people bordering on madness mensa-level geniuses carrying their own SCRABBLE boards and timers. They've memorized "vowel dump" words, OO-words and every Q word without a U after. My friend Robb from North Carolina is a competitive player and is staying at my place this week. Good luck to ya buddy!

Here are a couple of stickers whose call letters and frequency resemble SCRABBLE tiles.
