English language, government-run Chinese radio began in 1947. Then known as XNCR, their studios were located in a cave at the foot of the Taihang Mountains in northern China. Operations soon moved to Peking and a name change to Radio Peking took place in April, 1950. Another name change to Radio Beijing occured in 1983. China's external radio service is currently known as China Radio International.
