KMEL
KMEL is an Urban Contemporary station in San Francisco, California. "Kamel 106" began in 1977 as an Album Oriented Rock outlet with a Victor Moscoso-designed camel for a station mascot. By the early 80s they were one of six(!) Rock stations in the Bay area and ended up flipping to Top-40 in 1984. The KMEL "All Hit 106" sticker above was one of the first decals added to my collection when they mailed it to me in 1985. As the decade progressed, KMEL's CHR format started leaning more Urban and they eventually went full-time Hip Hop/R&B by 1992.
A website dedicated to the early history of KMEL can be found here.
