Radio broadcasting at the State University of New York-Stony Brook began in 1962 with a carrier current station heard only on campus. Efforts to secure an FM signal began in 1970 but were delayed for much of the decade. A land deal for the transmitter site fell through and another college station at Adelphi University objected to their plans citing potential signal interference. 90.1 FM WUSB finally went on the air in June 1977. The volunteer-run outlet is Long Island's largest non-commercial Free-Form radio station.
