Sunday Sticker - KLRD

K-LORD is a Christian music station which began broadcasting in 1986. In the mid-90s they became the first of many insidious “Air 1” radio stations of which there are now over one billion 100 spread across the country mostly via broadcast translators. KLRD is licensed to Yucaipa, California.

whats so insidious about “Air 1”?

I'm pretty sure that translators were originally meant to boost the broadcast range of radio signals within a fairly confined geographic region, not across the country. Non-profit organizations-usually religious-take advantage of a loophole which allow them to feed their translators satellite-fed programming far, far away from the home station's coverage area. Regular commercial broadcasters are required to have their translator signal received over the air, not by satellite, which puts them at a disadvantage. Certain religious broadcasters seem to gobble up most of the new translator frequencies which, in my mind, makes them "insidious."

I totally agree with you Greg. I have been trying for quite awhile to make an issue on Canadian radio boards about how groups like VOAR St. John's, CHIM Timmins, CIAM Northern Alberta, etc. have done exactly the same "pimping of frequencies" in this country as Air 1, K-Love, Effect Radio, etc. have done in the U.S. It's a total abuse of public airwaves and I'm not going to get off my soapbox until this abuse comes to an end.

What makes it even more bizarre in Canada is these freaks don't even have to apply to the CRTC for low powered licenses. All they have to do is "inform" Industry Canada of their plans and they're on the air subject to technical availability without any kind of screening.
