R.I.P. WFNX

Boston's locally owned, independent, Modern Rock station has been sold.  WFNX (named after current station owners Phoenix Media which also runs the Boston Phoenix weekly newspaper) began broadcasting Alternative music in 1983, making it one of the first stations with that format in the country.  Rumor has it that new owner (pending FCC approval) Clear Channel Communications might flip it to Country or Spanish.  It's also possible that FNX could live on as an internet-only station.  WFNX simulcasts on 92.1 WFEX-Peterborough, New Hampshire which has been sold to Blount Communications and plans to simulcast Religious WDER on the signal.  WFNX is licensed to Lynn, Massachusetts.

High School Radio Day

Thirty high school radio stations from across the country come together today to celebrate the first-ever High School Radio Day.  HSRD was created by the station manager from Andover High School's WBFH in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan to raise awareness of high school radio and was inspired by College Radio Day.  It is held in May because that was the month that the first high school radio station, WNAS in New Albany, Indiana, hit the air in 1949.

WCWT is from Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio and is the closest participating radio station to where I live.  They've been on the air since 1971 and currently broadcast with 23 watts at 107.3 FM.

Radio Sticker of the Day Mailbag - WTUE

One day while working the counter at the post office, I helped a customer mail a package that I noticed was being sent from Clear Channel Radio.  The sender was a CC employee and as we got to talking I mentioned my radio sticker collection.  He said to give him my address and he'd round up some stickers for me.  Thanks George!!!

104.7 WTUE has been a Rock station in Dayton, Ohio for 36 years.  After switching from Top-40 in 1976 they were known as "T-105" and carried an Album Oriented Rock format.

A late-1970s(?) advertising brochure.  How rare must it have been for a solo female to DJ morning drive at a rock station?  Now that I think about it....are there any that do it now?  In any format?

A WTUE postcard from around 1988.

CD booklet from WTUE's fourth and last Homegrown Album from 1990.

Another T-U-E sticker can be seen here.
