WPLT

Detroit, Michigan's "96.3 The Planet" began around 1994 with a mix of Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop echoing the music being played on MTV at the time.  Their call letters were WHYT but changed to WPLT in 1997 after they paid a college station in upstate New York for the right to use the WPLT calls.  A format shift to Modern Adult Contemporary station with an emphasis on Classic Alternative acts took place around this time.  WPLT lasted until 2001 when they flipped to Hot AC and changed call letters to WDVD.
