Irish station Radio 2 went on the air in May 1979. The goverment-owned outlet was developed as a response to the spread of dozens of pirate radio stations in a country where private commercial radio remained illegal until 1989. Radio 2 became "2FM" in 1988 and are now known as
RTÉ 2 FM.
