Market #1s - Los Angeles - KIIS

KIIS "KISS FM" has been a CHR/Top 40 station since 1975. They were #1 in the latest Arbitron ratings book for Los Angeles. Clear Channel Communications, which has owned the station since 1998, uses KIIS FM's distinctive red and yellow lettering for its many KISS FM stations across the country. Examples of that tomorrow.....

Market #1s - Minneapolis - KQRS

KQRS (Quality Rock Station) became a Freeform Rock station in the late 1960s after switching from Beautiful Music as KEYD. By 1977 their programming tightened up and they became a more mainstream Album-Oriented Rock station and today they're exclusively a Classic Rock station. KQRS has been at near the top of the audience ratings for years and were #1 in the most recent Minneapolis Arbitron book. KQRS AM was split from the FM in 1996 to become KDIZ, one of the first Radio Disney outlets in the country. KQRS is licensed to Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Cadena 100

Tough to find much info about this station.  I think Cadena 100 is (or was) a group of stations spread around Argentina that plays popular music.  There is currently a Cadena 100 at 99.9 FM in Buenos Aires but this particular station is from the city of Rosario.

Sunday Sticker - KCAS

91.5 FM KCAS is a non-profit, Religious radio station licensed to McCook, Texas.

Dart on Map - WLYF

After a dozen or so throws in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and extreme northern Canada, today's dart finally landed on a place called Frog City, Florida. There are few radio stations in the Everglades so I had to slide about 25 miles east and choose a station from Miami.
WWPB began broadcasting in 1948 with an Easy Listening format. The call letters were changed to WLYF in 1969 and, after a signal strength increase to 100,000 watts, they became the first FM station in the country to achieve a number one audience rating. The station has since evolved into an Adult Contemporary format as 101.5 LITE FM. WLYF is licensed to Miami, Florida.

Places I've Lived #2 - Palmyra, Pennsylvania

My father got a job at the Hershey chocolate factory so we moved from Florida to Palmyra, Pennsylvania in 1971. My parents were originally from this part of the country, dad grew up in Lebanon and mom lived in various Pennsylvania towns whenever her preacher father changed congregations. I lived here until I was 8 years old at which point we moved to a garbage barge New Jersey.

WWSM is a Classic Country music station licensed to Annville-Cleona, Pennsylvania just east of Palmyra.  Their call letters are likely a nod to the most famous Country music station in the country.

UPDATE: WWSM has ceased broadcasting over-the-air and their license was canceled in November 2022.  They can still be heard at their website which, at least as I write this, has the 1510 AM frequency all over it.

KVOO AM & FM

1170 AM KVOO (The (K) Voice Of Oklahoma) was put on the air in 1926 by an oil millionaire named E.H. Rollestone. They had a Country music format for most of their history as well as an award winning news department. Paul Harvey began his career at KVOO in 1933. KVOO AM switched to Talk in 2002 with KFAQ as their new call letters.
KVOO FM began in the early 1970s as KBJH with a Religious format before going Contemporary Christian as KCFO. They started simulcasting with their AM sister station in 1988. KVOO is licensed to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

National Pig Day

March 1st is National Pig Day in the United States. There is a ridiculous "National fill-in-the-blank Day" almost every day of the year (it's also National Peanut Butter Lovers Day) but it gives me a good excuse to post a couple swine related stickers.

WPIG - Olean, New York. "Sizzlin?" Is that supposed to make me think of bacon?
WPIG was also the fictional rival of WKRP on the classic sitcom "WKRP in Cincinnati."

KPIG grew out of the defunct KFAT which shared a similar Americana format and local, offbeat flavor. Their sticker designs are similar as well. KPIG is licensed to Freedom, California.

The back of a KPIG t-shirt.  The front has the same logo as their sticker.

From 2005 until 2010 KPIG could be heard on 1510 AM licensed to Piedmont, California near San Francisco.

Sunday Sticker - KBSN

My sticker file has a big question mark next to the city of license for this station. There is a KBSN currently in Moses Lake, Washington at 1470 AM. There is also KTBI, a Religious station at 810 AM in nearby Ephrata. Is there a connection between the two? Dan? Anybody?
UPDATE:  See comments.  Geez, Dan does it again.  If you weren't retired I'd feel bad about all the time you must spend solving my sticker mysteries.  Thanks again!
