Sunday Sticker - KFSG
KFSG (named after the International Church of the FourSquare Gospel) was an Adult Contemporary Christian station in Los Angeles, California. KFSG started out at 1080 AM back in the 1920s before ending up at 96.3 FM around 1970. In 2001 KFSG moved again, this time to 93.5 FM where they dropped the music and went to Religious Talk. This lasted until 2003 when they were sold to the Spanish Broadcasting System. 96.3 FM is currently KXOL, a Rhythmic Latin station known as "Latino 96.3."

Gene Simmons Turns 60
I was looking at a list of famous people who share my birthday today:
Monty HallSean Connery
Regis Philbin
Rollie Fingers
Rob Halford
Geoff Downes
Elvis Costello
Tim Burton
Billy Ray Cyrus
Claudia Schiffer
and
Gene Simmons from KISS who turns 60. Gene really, really, really, likes money. Did you know that he trademarked the moneybag logo with the dollar sign on it? I thought that image had been used for years and was in the public domain. Apparently he used to turn the S of his last name into a dollar sign when signing autographs. A lawyer said he should copyright the two slashes going through the S which he did. He then got a copyright for the moneybag too.

KHYI
KHYI is not a typical Country music station and might best be described by their Yahoo! Groups Fan Site:
KHYI 95.3 (www.khyi.com) is the biggest and best Americana station in the world (or at least, Dallas), and it's all about the music. Call it "insurgent country", "No Depression" music, alt.country, or whatever you like... what it ain't is Garth, Shania, Billy Ray, or any of the rest of that NashVegas crap!
This sticker came out around 2002 and they've since changed their branding to "95.3 FM The Range" but they still carry an "Alternative/Outlaw/Classic Country" format with an emphasis on local Texas artists. KHYI is licensed to Howe, Texas and is a rimshot into the Dallas/Ft. Worth market.

WSPD
Former plumber and current colossal blowhard Joe Wurzelbacher might soon have a regular gig at News/Talker WSPD in Toledo, Ohio. Wurzelbacher made his radio debut last Tuesday night on the “Eye On Toledo” program. “There’s a possibility radio and WSPD could be part of his future,” said program director and stunt hiring enthusiast Brian Wilson. “Joe the Plumber” became a household name when he talked on-camera with then-candidate Obama about his small business tax plan during last year’s presidential campaign.

CMJ New Music
I subscribe to a few music magazines--Rolling Stone, Paste, Spin and, until they went belly-up, Blender. I also get CMJ New Music Monthly which I honestly thought had ceased to exist as I hadn't gotten an issue for months. I didn't think anything of it because their timeliness has been spotty for years. When a "new" issue did arrive it was frequently outdated. The latest one which I received in the mail yesterday is dated June 20th and their charts are from the first week of July. It's probably a good idea that they dropped the "Monthly" from their title and just go by "CMJ New Music" now. I always liked CMJ (which stands for College Music Journal and covers indie/"alternative" music) because it came with a sampler CD and has turned me on to countless bands since I started subscribing in 1994. Now the physical disc is gone too and only available as a download. Too bad they didn't offer subscribers a choice between CD and download like Paste did recently. For some reason I still want the compact disc.
96 FM WCMJ has nothing to do with the College Music Journal and wouldn't be caught dead playing Art Brut, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective or any other beloved CMJ band. They're a Contemporary Hit Music station licensed to Cambridge, Ohio.

Dart on Map - WQTE
Occasionally I like to throw a virtual dart at a map and find the closest radio sticker that I have to where it landed. The dart this time ended up next to the Lenawee County Airport in Adrian, Michigan.

Radio Obsessive Profile #3
I was recently interviewed via email by Jennifer Waits from the blog Radio Survivor. Besides writing for RS, Jennifer is the founder and editor of Spinning Indie, a fantastic blog focusing on college radio. She's also a DJ at KFJC in the beautiful San Francisco Bay area. For those curious to know how this whole radio sticker collecting nonsense got started, click here. KFJC is the campus station at Foothill College located in Los Altos Hills, California. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary in October of this year.

Cheap Sunglasses
Just as every station known as "Kicks" is required by law to be a Country station, every "Cool" or "Kool" seems to carry an Oldies format. All three of these stations have different owners and are in no way related but somehow ended up with virtually identical logos. I have 59 stickers from "Cool"/"Kool" stations...I would guess about a third of them are sporting these same Wayfarers.
WQQL - Springfield, Illinois
KAMS - Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. Now a Country station "K-Kountry 95."

WTHU
WTHU went on the air in Thurmont, Maryland on June 12, 1967. An old Broadcasting Yearbook from the 1970s said their format was "Mod Country" while other sites listed them as Adult Standards or Middle-of-the-Road. WTHU is now a Religious station after being sold to the Christian Radio Coalition in 2008.
