KQAA "Kool 95" was an Oldies station licensed to Aberdeen, South Dakota. 94.9 FM is currently KLRJ, one of a million or so stations in the Christian K-LOVE radio network.

Radio in the Movies #5 - "A Prairie Home Companion"

"A Prairie Home Companion" is a backstage look at the last performance of a long-running radio variety show. It stars Garrison Keillor as himself along with a large ensemble cast including Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Lindsay Lohan, Virginia Madsen and Tommy Lee Jones. The fictional APHC has run on WLT radio (With Lettuce and Tomato) for 30 years but an oily businessman has bought the theatre with plans on shutting down the show. The security guard narrates the story and becomes attracted to a mysterious woman in a white trench coat.  There’s also music—lots and lots of music--all of it fitting into the standard APHC repertoire of folk, bluegrass, standards, country and gospel. Harrelson and Reilly play singing cowboys Dusty and Lefty while Streep and Tomlin play the duo the Johnson Sisters. All the actors sang their own songs and played their own instruments. I’m not a huge fan of this type of music but the characters and Keillor’s charm and impeccable voice made it worth watching….once. This was the last film directed by Robert Altman who died about 5 months after it was released.

The actual A Prairie Home Companion radio show first aired on Minnesota Public Radio in 1974. It still broadcasts live Saturday nights from the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul on almost 600 public radio stations.

KSJN is the flagship station of Minnesota Public Radio's classical music network. Before 1991, 99.5 FM was best known in Minneapolis for being the home of WLOL, a top-rated CHR station.  KSJN's previous home on the dial was at 91.1 FM.

KSJN had a sister station at 1330 AM from 1980 to 1989.

KIKI-AM

KIKI was a Top-40 station in Honolulu, Hawaii. 830 AM is now home to News/Talk KHVH.

KIKI carried a Country format circa 1997 and had also moved to 990 AM. KIKI now carries a News/Talk format.

WBZ is a News/Talk station from Boston, Massachusetts. CBSBoston.com claims that on September 15th, 1921, WBZ became "the first station licensed as a "commecial" radio station," when it was located in East Springfield, MA.

CKDO

CKDO (CK Durham and Ontario Counties) is an Oldies station licensed to Oshawa, Ontario.

Actual Sticker Sighting #10 - WRCM

I saw this magnet on a car with South Carolina plates while getting on I-70 today. "New Life 91.9" WRCM (W Robertson C. McQuiken) is a Contemporary Christian station licensed to Wingate, North Carolina near Charlotte. WRCM went on the air in 1993 and is owned by Columbia International University who McQuicken was the first president of (when it was known as Columbia Bible College.)

CKNX

AM 920 CKNX broadcasts Country music as well as News/Talk programming from Wingham, Ontario. They first went on the air in 1935 at 1200 AM.

CKNX FM went on the air 42 years later and airs a Hot Adult Contemporary format known as "101.7 The One."

West Sound broadcasts "The Best of the 60s, 70s and More!" from Ayrshire, Scotland. Their format also includes new music although it appears their playlist hasn't been updated since around 2009.

Radio ABC

Radio ABC is a hit music station based in Randers, Denmark.

Attack of the Killer B100s

"B100" WBYT is a Country station from Elkhart, Indiana.

This "B100" was a Top-40 station licensed to Burgaw, North Carolina. My records show that their call letters were WKXB but they might actually have been WVBS when this sticker came out. They would later become a Country station "Kix Country 99.9" which would fit the WKXB call letters better. Anybody know for sure? This frequency is currently home to a Rhythmic Adult Contemporary station "Jammin 99.9" now licensed to Boiling Spring Lakes, NC.

I happened across your web blog with regard to Radio Station Decals/Stickers...

With regard to B100 (WKXB)... its been a long time.. however, before that radio station was a top 40 station - it use to be a gospel station... the call letters were WPJC (We Praise Jesus Christ).

I was only about 10/11 years old at the time, my parents had just moved us down from Philly, Pa during the summer...this would be around 1981/82... before we left Philly, Pa, I remember my mom taking communications course work part time and that helped her to land a radio DJ position with the burgaw, radio station that was call signed: WPJC.

I'm sure the station has changed over the years, it was a quite small station back then, had only 2 rooms for DJ's back then(yes, i had been inside on a few occasions, even got to cut a commerical for a hair salon as I recall once)...but they were always broadcasting on 100.

I think it was around 85/86(it was about the same time when the TV series called: The Greatest American Hero was on air) when the radio station switched from gospel to a top 40 station... as the owner was none other than the actor who played "Hunniecutt" from the M*A*S*H TV series. I think my mom still has that picture of her with him in the station together!)

Anyway, at the end of my mom's shift, she would play the theme song from that TV show for me to let me know she was on her way home(my parents divorced when I was about 13)...

"106.7 The Fan" WNFN was a Sports Talk station licensed to Belle Meade, Tennessee from 2004 to 2009. The frequency is currently home to the Top-40 station "i106" now licensed to Millersville, TN.

KFNZ "1320 AM KFAN" is a Sports station in Salt Lake City, Utah (as some bozo idiotically wrote on the front of the above sticker.)

WDUZ "107.5 The Fan" is a --you guessed it-- Sports station licensed to Brillion, Wisconsin. They also broadcast at 1400 AM licensed to Green Bay, WI.

KXIA

"KIX 101.1" KXIA is a Country music station licensed to Marshalltown, Iowa near Des Moines.

WVPE

WVPE is a National Public Radio affiliate in Elkhart, Indiana.

WOOS

WOOS was an automated Top-40 station in Canton, Ohio circa 1979.

By the mid-1980s they were an Album Rock station known as "Goodrock 107." Soon after they changed calls to WRQK which is still around today.

WCRB

WCRB (W Charles River Broadcasting) is a Classical station licensed to Lowell, Massachusetts outside Boston. WCRB moved from 102.5 FM to 99.5 FM in 2006.
