WHLB

The 1980 Broadcasting Yearbook lists WHLB (W Head of the Lakes Broadcasting) as having a Middle-of-the-Road format...and at least a little polka too.  It was licensed to Virginia, Minnesota in the northeastern part of the state known as the Iron Range because of its vast deposits of iron ore.  No stations are currently licensed to Virginia, MN and it's unclear what became of the signals at 107.1 FM and 1400 AM.

According to the REC NET site WHLB 107.1 evolved into WUSZ 99.9 Hibbing.

It looks like WHLB 1400 went dark in 1997. A group called Full Armor Ministries obtained a license in the early 2000's to get it back on the air, but that apparently never happened.

I met James Reese, a black DJ at WHLB around 1960. Any info on him?

The lights were on and the music played until March of 2001, then the mics went silent, the new owner took over, changed it to WEEP, which didn't last long..Sad ending to one of the best stations around.
