On July 24, 1978, New York City's 92.3 WKTU switched from Soft Rock to a Disco-based Rhythmic Top-40 station known as "Disco 92". The results were immediate as WKTU jumped from a paltry 0.9 percent share of listeners to over an 11 share within just a few months (knocking off long-time ratings winner WABC in the process.) The 1980s saw the station drop the "Disco" branding and gain new challengers with the arrival of WHTZ and WPLJ who eventually forced KTU to flip to Rock as WXRK.
Why is Carrie Fisher sitting in a New York City trashcan circa 1980? Who cares?! I'm more interested in the sweet WKTU logo on the back of the bus.
In 1996, the WKTU call letters returned to NYC with the launch of a dance-based CHR format at 103.5 FM.
