WMC
Memphis, Tennessee's WMC is a Hot Adult Contemporary station and the first FM station in the city having gone on the air in May 1947. Their monster 290,000-watt signal puts them in a class of "superpower" stations as they are authorized to broadcast at a higher strength than is normally allowed. After starting out as an Easy Listening station, they eventually morphed into a Progressive Rock outlet in the late 1960s. They then evolved into a highly successful Top-40/CHR station until 1992 when they took on their current Hot AC format. FM100's call letters stand for (W) Memphis Commercial Appeal, the newspaper they were formerly co-owned with.
