Student radio at the University of Chicago began in 1945 with AM carrier current station WUCB. WHPK (Woodlawn Hyde Park Kenwood--three South Side areas of Chicago) was established in 1968, first at 88.3 FM and later at 88.5 FM where they've been since 1985. The 100-watt, block-programmed station is run by student volunteers and community members. WHPK played a pioneering role in the Chicago rap scene and was the first station in the city to play hip-hop back in 1984.
