1440 AM WGEM began broadcasting in Quincy, Illinois on New Year's Day 1948. Formats over time included Middle-of-the-Road, Adult Contemporary, News/Talk and Sports. After losing both its main and backup transmitters, the 5,000-watt station went off the air permanently in 2022. WGEM was an ESPN Radio affiliate and had carried Chicago Cubs baseball games since 1985. Their call letters referred to Quincy being known as the "Gem City"

While AM1440 signed off, it's format moved to sister-station WGEM-FM (at 105.1). WGEM-AM and FM were/are co-owned, with another sister-station, WGEM-TV, by Gray Television.
WGEM-FM has the unique distinction of being the only radio station owned by Gray, which primarily owns/operates TV stations (180 at current count).
