KJLH

102.3 FM KJLH is an Urban Adult Contemporary station in Los Angeles, California.  They began in 1965 when KILB was sold to an African-American businessman and flipped formats to R&B/Soul and Jazz.  The new owner, John Lamar Hill, used his initials as the call letters for the station that was licensed to Long Beach, CA at the time.  The call letters eventually came to stand for Kindness Joy Love and Happiness.  Hill owned KJLH for over 14 years before selling it to musician Stevie Wonder in 1979.  Format tweaks took place over the years developing out of competition from other Black-targeted stations including KDAY, KKBT and KPWR.  KJLH is licensed to Compton, California.

The August 22, 1983 cover of Time Magazine shows Jesse Jackson, a few weeks prior to announcing his campaign to become president of the US, in front of a KJLH microphone.
