WAVE

Sarasota, Florida's 102.5 FM WAVE FM played a mix of Adult Contemporary and Jazz circa 1985/86.  This sounds like a possible format continuation from when they held the call letters WSRZ and were known as "The Music Wave."  By 1987 they changed calls to WHVE.  "The Wave" is a not uncommon radio station branding.  I counted more than 30 in my collection.  So I was surprised to learn that there are currently no stations with the call letters WAVE on either AM or FM according to the very reliable radio-locator.com

That's because there is a television station with the callsign, WAVE, in Louisville, Kentucky. WAVE-TV (which is callsigned as simply "WAVE") has carried that callsign since 1948.

WAVE-TV is not named after an ocean wave, but a radio wave. From 1933-1981, Louisville AM station WGTK also carried the WAVE call sign (and was owned by the same company). The station made a big deal about their radio "wave"s. :)

Today, WAVE-TV, brands as simply "WAVE News", previously "WAVE 3 News".
