KROQ AM

1500 AM KROQ was a Rock station in Los Angeles, California beginning in 1972.  A year later the owners bought what was then KPPC-FM and began simulcasting on 106.7 FM with new call letters KROQ-FM.  Financial problems shut down both stations but they returned in 1976 just in time for the emergence of Punk Rock and New Wave music to be added to their freeform format.  By 1980 KROQ fully committed to New Wave/Modern Rock and also ended the AM/FM simulcast.  KROQ-FM went on to become the most groundbreaking, influential and successful Alternative Rock station in the country while KROQ-AM began airing a Spanish-language format.
