WRKS

"98.7 Kiss FM" is an Urban Adult Contemporary station in New York City. The former Adult Top-40 of WXLO became WRKS (W RKO Station) in June, 1981 eventually taking the low-ranked station from 22nd to 3rd in the ratings. In 1983 "Kiss FM" became the first station in the United States to play Rap music on a regular basis. They've since carried various strains of the Urban format and currently play "Classic Soul and Today's R&B."

Super Bowl XLVI

America's most-watched sporting event of the year takes place later today as the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. It's a rematch of the Super Bowl from 2008 when the Giants defeated the Pats to ruin their run at a perfect 19-0 season. As a Buffalo Bills fan for over 25 years, and despite what happened in Super Bowl XXV, I'll be rooting hard for the Giants to destroy the hated Patriots. New England shares the same division with the Bills, plays them twice a year, and has dominated Buffalo for most of the past decade. (Who hasn't dominated the Bills for the past decade?) I despise Tom Brady. I loathe Bill Belichick. I detest Robert Kraft. GO GIANTS!!

WBCN was a Rock station in Boston, Massachusetts for over 40 years and the flagship station of the New England Patriots Radio Network (now at WBZ-FM.) Prior to 1968, they were an Easy Listening station and before that had a Classical format (their call letters stood for (W)Boston Concert Network.) WBCN lives on as a digital-only HD-2 station. Their old frequency is now Hot Adult Contemporary WBMX "Hot 104.1"
I found this decal at the post office where I work. It was stuck to the back of a reusable rolling mail container which had obviously been in the Boston area at one point. So I pulled it off and stuck it to some thin poster board and added one more sticker to the collection.

WFAN is a Sports station in New York City and the flagship of the New York Giants Radio Network. WFAN became the world's first 24 hour all-sports station in 1987 when they were located at 1050 AM. After moving to 660 AM and with the addition of Don Imus in morning drive, the ratings for WFAN jumped considerably. They were the number one billing station in the US in the 1990s and the model for sports stations across the country.

WOR

WOR has been broadcasting from New York, New York since 1922. In 1927 they moved from 740 AM to 710 AM and that same year became a charter member of the CBS Radio Network. In the early 1940s their city-of-license changed from Newark, New Jersey to New York City. For much of its existence WOR was a Full Service station including talk shows, music and 15 minutes of news at the top of every hour. By the mid-1980s the music was gone and they were almost exclusively a Talk station. The station with New York City's only three letter call sign is now a News/Talk station airing mostly conservative talk shows including Lou Dobbs and Michael Savage. WOR will celebrate its 90th birthday next month.

R.I.P. WRXP

New York City airwaves will soon lose an Alternative Rock station as WRXP (W Rock eXPerience) will likely flip to News/Talk after a little more than three years on the air. Last month Emmis Communications announced that they'd be selling "101.9RXP" along with Chicago stations WLUP and WKQX. As I'm writing this, WRXP's website still has the station streaming jockless and with commercials.

The Big Apple

We flew into New York City yesterday for a surprise visit to my stepson who's off-Broadway show opened Friday night. We saw last night's performance and it was hysterical. If you like comedy, improv and a little audience participation then this show is for you. Great stuff. Reid, we are SO proud of you.

This morning we strolled around a flea market and then had breakfast at a place called Hell's Kitchen. I ordered the pancakes but they brought what I think was French toast instead. Good thing though because those doughy slabs of cinnamony goodness were unbelievably awesome. After that we took the subway down to Battery Park and hopped a ferry to the Statue of Liberty. The green lady is much larger and majestic in person and up close. We weren't able to go up into the crown but just walking around the base was impressive enough.

Next we walked around Wall Street and Ground Zero. They appear to be conducting some preliminary construction on something but no one can agree what should be built. Lots of cranes and workers but not much rising up into the sky. The 9-11 families want a memorial and businessmen want a replacement structure. Surely there's a way to do both.

Next was dinner at a dumpy yet delicious Mexican joint called La Paloma. We then gathered up Reid after his matinee show and headed towards Times Square. This place was like being inside a television set; massive building-sized billboards and gigantic, multi-story TV screens lit up the night. An overload of advertising and people watching that we've all seen on New Year's Eve but it's something else to experience in person.

Then it was a short stroll to a place that I still can't believe exists--The NHL Store on the Avenue of the Americas. I love hockey and this store is an orgy of jerseys, shirts, hats, skates...anything you can think of from all 30 National Hockey League teams (as well as some that don't exist anymore.) Saw some very cool throwback Buffalo Sabres gear that I somehow resisted purchasing.
Off we went, this time to Magnolia's Bakery for a slice of Snicker's pie and chunky banana pudding which we ate while watching the skaters at Rockefeller Center.

After a quick stop at the hotel it was back to the subway for a ride to the East Village. Had a couple Brooklyn Winter Ales and watched the Colts/Patriots game. Our 5:30 wake up call was fast approaching so we called it a night. All in all, a brief yet busy first-time visit to The Big Apple.

Radio logo-wise I saw a handful of WHTZ "Z100" stickers on a few cars as well as a Radio Lausitz button pinned to a German tourist's backpack (which I could have easily stolen as I was standing right behind him in line for Statue of Liberty tickets.) I also saw this sticker slapped on the side of a hot dog cart.

New York does indeed rock. Thanks for showing us the city Reid and Jason!!

WNEW

Another "new" sticker, magnet and shirt for the new year. I think the Statue Of Liberty logo is a mid-90s-era one for the heritage New York City rock station. A string of format changes including Talk, CHR and Adult Contemporary followed and then the WNEW call letters were gone forever (at least in NYC.)
