WEFM

WEFM (W Eugene F. McDonald--an executive at the Zenith Radio Corporation) was a Top-40 station in Chicago, Illinois from 1978 to 1982. Prior to this they were a Classical station and the second station in the United States to broadcast in FM stereo. 99.5 FM is currently Country WUSN.

KXKX

"Kix 105" KXKX is a Country station licensed to the oddly named Knob Noster, Missouri. The town's name came from two local hills, or "knobs," that appear in an otherwise flat part of the state. Combined with "noster," which is Latin for "our," and the town's name is essentially "Our Hill."

KPYK

KPYK is a Big Band/Adult Standards station licensed to Terrell, Texas.

Pope John Paul II Beatified

Last Sunday, Pope John Paul II was beatified in a ceremony held at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. Beatification declares that a person be "blessed" and is the last step to becoming a full blown saint. For sainthood to take place, a miracle must have been performed and it is said that John Paul cured a nun of Parkinson's disease. I'm not a Catholic so I find all this beatification a bit baffling.

This sticker came out when the Pope visited St. Louis, Missouri in January, 1999. It was John Paul's last visit to the US before his death in 2005. Over 104,000 people attended Mass at the Trans World Dome which set a record for the largest indoor gathering ever in the United States. KSHE is a Rock station licensed to Crestwood, MO. Sweetmeat is the station's longtime pig mascot.

Radio Vaticana broadcasts in 47 languages on shortwave, mediumwave, FM, satellite and the internet. Their first broadcast was in February, 1931 and was attended by Guglielmo Marconi, who "invented" radio. In 2009, they began airing commercials for the first time in order to meet rising costs. Vatican Radio programming includes news, religious ceremonies and music.

KIKI-FM

KIKI was a Rhythmic Top-40 station from Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2010 they became KHJZ, a Rhythmic Adult Contemporary station known as "93.9 Jamz."

KABC

KABC (K American Broadcasting Company) is a News/Talk station from Los Angeles, California. Their history dates back to 1925 when they went on the air as KVFV. They switched calls to KABC in 1954 and became one of the first "all-talk" stations in the country in 1960. 790 AM is also the flagship station of the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network, whose games have been voiced by the incomparable Vin Scully since 1950.

Today marks the 65th anniversary of AM 1230 KWTX in Waco, Texas. Former KWTX DJ/announcer Mike Braun worked there from 1975-1979 and is the owner of what might be the only existing KWTX sticker from that time period. Here's Mike with a brief station history...

**** Radio station KWTX-AM celebrates 65 years of serving Waco and Central Texas ****

KWTX radio, Waco, Texas, was founded by Beauford Jester and a group of Waco businessmen. Jester would later become Texas governor.

An application for the station was made in 1941, but the start of World War II imposed equipment and construction restrictions across the United States, delaying the station's approval and completion for five years.

KWTX radio's inaugural broadcast was May 1, 1946, at "1-2-3 on your dial" (1230 kc) from a studio in downtown Waco. The station aired a mix of music, news, sports and drama, and was affiliated with the Mutual radio network.

The station moved to a new facility on Bosque Boulevard in the early '50s. The building would become known as Broadcast Center, sharing space with KWTX-TV (Channel 10) in 1955 and KWTX-FM (97.5) 1970.

Twenty-eight-year-old M.N. "Buddy" Bostick was the station manager when KWTX-AM first began broadcasting. Mr. Bostick would later become president of KWTX Broadcasting Company. The ownership group would put KWTX-TV (Channel 10) on the air in 1955, followed by KBTX-TV, Bryan-College Station (Channel 3) in 1957, along with the purchase of KXII-TV, Ardmore, Oklahoma (Channel 12). The company acquired KNAL radio, Victoria, Texas, in 1959 and KLFY-TV, Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1965. KWTX-FM, Waco (97.5) would go on the air in 1970.

KWTX-AM programmed an adult middle-of-the-road music format with a mix of news, weather and sports until it switched to news/talk in 1996.

KWTX-AM and FM were sold to GulfStar Communications in 1996, ending Mr. Bostick's 50-year relationship with KWTX radio. The stations are now owned by Clear Channel Communications. The radio stations are located at 314 West State Hwy. 6., Waco. KWTX-TV was sold to Gray Communications in 1999. The TV station is located at 6700 American Plaza, Waco.

Today FM

A sheet of mini-stickers from Today FM based in Dublin, Ireland. Today FM plays contemporary music mixed with news and current affairs and broadcasts throughout the country. They first went on the air on Saint Patrick's Day 1997.

WBMX

WBMX is a Hot Adult Contemporary station from Boston, Massachusetts. In 2009, they moved up the dial to 104.1 FM while 98.5 became WBZ-FM "The Sports Hub."

2AAA

2AAA is a community radio station broadcasting from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. They first went on the air in 1981 and play a variety of genres including Rock, Country, Jazz, News/Talk and Multicultural programming. In the local Wiradjuri Aboriginal language, Wagga Wagga means either "place of many crows" or "staggering like a drunken man."

"106.1 Kiss FM" KHKS is a CHR station from Dallas, Texas. They were the #1 rated station in that city's latest Arbitron results. KHKS is licensed to Denton, TX.

KHVH

KHVH (Kaiser Hawaiian Village Hotel) is a News/Talk station from Honolulu, Hawaii.

WVON

WVON (W Voice Of the Negro) is an African-American-targeted Talk station from Chicago, Illinois. In 1963, Leonard and Phil Chess of Chess Records fame bought what was then WHFC and turned it into a successful R&B station as WVON. Berry Gordy, the head of Motown Records, made sure that every song he produced was sent to WVON before any other station. After an ownership change in 1969, a frequency change from 1450 AM to 1390 AM took place which provided better coverage throughout the Chicago area. WVON flipped from music to talk in 1986 and now appears at 1690 AM licensed to Berwyn, IL.

Duck Appreciation Day

This place claims that today is Duck Appreciation Day. The ducks must be loving the weather around here because Dayton's record for most rainfall in the month of April is about to be broken. Over 7.5 inches have fallen so far with more on the way. A little over an inch more and it will be the fifth rainiest month ever in the Miami Valley.

KDUK is a Top-40 station licensed to Florence, Oregon.

"Shine 89.7" WONU is a Contemporary Christian station owned by Olivet Nazarene University and licensed to Kankakee, Illinois.

WJCL

"Kix 96" WJCL (W J. Curtis Lewis--the station's founder) is a Country music outlet from Savannah, Georgia.

WCQS

88.1 FM WCQS is a public radio station licensed to Asheville, North Carolina. They also broadcast on WFQS 91.3 FM licensed to Franklin, NC as well as nine low-power translators to cover the mountainous western part of the state.

KUER

KUER is a public radio station broadcasting from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Other KUER stickers can be seen here.

KOME

KOME was a legendary Rock station in San Jose, California from 1971 to 1998. In the early 1970s they became the first station owned by what would eventually become Infinity Broadcasting. KOME's unique diamond-shaped "road sign" stickers became ubiquitous in the South Bay area and beyond. Their call letters were driven home by sexually suggestive slogans such as "Wake up with KOME in your ear" and "The KOME spot on your dial" (something these guys may have been influenced by.) KOME started out as a Freeform Rock station then segued into Heavy Metal/AOR before flipping to New Rock/Alternative in the mid-1990s. 98.5 FM became Classic Rock KUFX in 1998.
