WQXR? No! WLYQ

"Q96 FM" is a bit of a mystery.  I thought it was from WQXR in New York City but now I'm not so sure.

The back of the sticker (click it bigger) dates it to 1981 when the Broadcasting Yearbook says WQXR-FM duplicated the Classical programming of WQXR-AM 100%.  The same listing appears in the 1980 and 1983 Yearbook as well.  This sticker certainly doesn't look like it's from a Classical station and has the look of a typical Top-40 outlet of the time.  The backing also mentions the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York which at least locates the station geographically somewhat.  Anybody know what station this sticker is from?

UPDATE:  According to a helpful commenter, "Q96" was WLYQ in Norwalk, Connecticut.  Thanks for the info!  Doubly confirmed by doing a Google Image search for WLYQ and finding this mike flag with the same logo.

EDIT:  Seven years after I originally posted this, I received this "Q96" sticker with a Stroh's logo.  The back of the decal mentions Fairfield County for further proof that it's from WLYQ in Norwalk, CT.

WMMR

93.3 WMMR (W MetroMedia Radio) is a Rock station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The heritage station has carried some form of the format since 1968 including Progressive Rock, AOR, Classic Rock and Active Rock.

WJDX

"620 AM The Score" was an all-Sports station licensed to Jackson, Mississippi.  WJDX switched to a  News/Talk format in 2011 while retaining their long-running "Mississippi Sports This Morning" show which has aired continuously since 1998.

Radio Sticker of the Day Mailbag - WRFD

Vince from Reynoldsburg, Ohio recently sent me some Columbus-area stickers in the mail.  Thanks a lot!!

I posted an older sticker from WRFD about three weeks ago.  Here are two more recent decals from the Christian Talk station licensed to Columbus, Ohio.

College Radio Day - WBGU

Today is the second annual College Radio Day which aims to "raise a greater, international awareness of the many college and high school radio stations that operate around the world by encouraging people who would not normally listen to college radio to do so on this day."  College radio is free from the restraints put on commercial stations and is able to play genres of music unthinkable to for-profit radio.  Support your local college radio station today!  (and everyday...)

88.1 FM WBGU broadcasts from the campus of (W) Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.  They began on the AM dial in 1948 as WRSM and has been broadcasting with the WBGU calls since the early 1950s.  WBGU is one of more than 500 stations from 28 countries participating in this year's College Radio Day.

WCSG

91.3 WCSG (W College and Seminary of Grand Rapids) is a Christian Adult Contemporary station in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  They are owned by Cornerstone University and began broadcasting in 1973 from what was then the Baptist Bible Institute of Grand Rapids.

KXLU

88.9 FM KXLU broadcasts from the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.  They first went on the air in 1957 and program a diverse range of music including Rock, Opera, Country, Metal, Reggae, Punk, Jazz and Oldies as well as "Alma Del Barrio," one of the longest running Latin radio shows in the country which started in 1973.

KQDI

AM 1450 KQDI is a News/Talk station in Great Falls, Montana.  The "I" in the call letters of the bottom sticker is formed by a drawing of "The Big Stack" which was part of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's smelting operation.  When the 506-foot structure was completed in 1908 it was the world's tallest smokestack and the third tallest structure on Earth, shorter only than the Washington Monument and the Eiffel Tower.  After one failed attempt, a demolitions team finally brought down the stack on September 18, 1982. 

KMOD

97.5 KMOD is a long-time Rock station in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  After almost 27 years on the air, it was recently announced that the morning show duo of Phil Stone & Brent Douglas will be leaving the station next month after failing to reach a contract extension with Clear Channel management.

KILJ

KILJ is an Easy Listening station licensed to Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  "Smooth Sounds 105.5" first broadcast on October 30, 1970.

Dart on Map - KOFI

It's been awhile since I've thrown a random dart at a map and posted a sticker from a nearby station.

The dart landed in the Flathead National Forest about halfway between Great Falls and Kalispell, Montana.

1180 AM KOFI is a News/Talk/Oldies station in Kalispell, MT.  They first broadcast on November 11, 1955.

KBUQ

"Young Buck Country" was a short-lived station from Phoenix, Arizona circa 1996-97.  KBUQ was licensed to Paradise Valley, AZ and is currently a Regional Mexican station KHOT "La Nueva 105.9"

KTKS

KTKS "Kiss 106" was a Top-40 station licensed to Denton, Texas from 1984 to 1987.  After flipping to New Age/Smooth Jazz as KAOI "The Oasis," they then switched back to CHR and relaunched the "Kiss FM" branding as KHKS in 1992.
The Cowboys and the Rangers are Dallas, Texas's pro football and baseball teams.

Downtown Radio

Another sticker from Northern Ireland's Downtown Radio.  A different DTR decal can be seen here.

KSON

KSON-FM has been a Country music station in San Diego, California since going on the air in January, 1964.  They originally had the call letters KSEA and simulcast the programming of sister station KSON-AM before becoming KSON-FM in 1980.  They were named "Large Market Station of the Year" at this year's Marconi Radio Awards.
