WUOG

90.5 FM WUOG has been the student-run station at the University of Georgia in Athens since 1972.  Their 26,000-watt signal makes them one of the more powerful college radio stations in the country.  A DJ at WUOG introduced four University of Georgia students to each other and soon after they formed the band R.E.M.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees got their first radio airplay on WUOG in the summer of 1980.  The station's philosophy states that no artists who had a song chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the past 20 years or has had an album chart in Top 20 of the Billboard 200 will get airplay on WUOG.  This rule has been broken for R.E.M. at least once.

KJLH

102.3 FM KJLH is an Urban Adult Contemporary station in Los Angeles, California.  They began in 1965 when KILB was sold to an African-American businessman and flipped formats to R&B/Soul and Jazz.  The new owner, John Lamar Hill, used his initials as the call letters for the station that was licensed to Long Beach, CA at the time.  The call letters eventually came to stand for Kindness Joy Love and Happiness.  Hill owned KJLH for over 14 years before selling it to musician Stevie Wonder in 1979.  Format tweaks took place over the years developing out of competition from other Black-targeted stations including KDAY, KKBT and KPWR.  KJLH is licensed to Compton, California.

The August 22, 1983 cover of Time Magazine shows Jesse Jackson, a few weeks prior to announcing his campaign to become president of the US, in front of a KJLH microphone.
