WRUF AM signed on the air from Gainesville, Florida in October 1928, making it the fifth oldest radio station in the state. The 5,000-watt outlet is owned by the University of Florida and is the flagship station of Florida Gator sports broadcasts. Despite being state-owned (UF is part of Florida's State University System) WRUF operates no differently than a privately owned commercial station except that their sports news department is run largely by School of Journalism students. WRUF flipped from News/Talk to Sports in 2010 and are now an ESPN Radio affiliate. WRUF 103.7 FM began broadcasting in 1948. They were known as "Rock 104" from 1983 until 2010 when they flipped to Country as "103.7 The Gator"
