WBEZ

A friend in Chicago recently posted this picture on Facebook.  It's part of Chicago Public Media's "2032 Membership Drive," a looong-term effort to boost the number of listeners one generation from now.  Other slogans in this unusual campaign include:
Do it. For Chicago.
You’re an interesting person. Pass it on. Like, literally. Through your DNA.
We want listeners tomorrow. Go make babies today.
and
To anyone NOT currently running a virtual farm: GoMakeBabies.com

91.5 FM WBEZ is a public radio station in Chicago, Illinois.  They broadcast the usual fare of National Public Radio and Public Radio International programming and also produce This American Life and Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, two of NPR's most popular shows.

Here's a station employee reminiscing about a vintage WBEZ logo.

UPDATE:  We spent Labor Day weekend of 2018 in Chicago and ran across WBEZ's studios while playing tourist at Navy Pier.  They were closed but I did manage to get their logos photographed.  Studio tours are apparently available by request.

WPLJ

An anonymous commenter asked if I had any WPLJ stickers from when they were known as "Mojo Radio" (I don't have any from their days as "Power 95"....sorry.)

In 1991, National Radio Hall of Fame member Scott Shannon was brought back from his Rock-40 "Pirate Radio" experiment in Los Angeles to become WPLJ's Program Director and morning drive host.  It was decided to de-emphasize the call letters of the station and rebrand as Mojo Radio.  This was WPLJ's last, short-lived attempt at a CHR format...they've been Hot AC or Modern AC ever since (with Shannon still helming AM drive with the Scott & Todd in the Morning show.)

Mystery Sticker - Q94 - SOLVED!

This Q94 sticker remains unidentified.  Anybody know where it's from?  The back of the sticker mentions Q94 "Sooper Troopers" but Googling hasn't helped.  I wrote KFRQ? during a previous attempt at identifying the station but Wikipedia says they started using those calls in 1992 and this decal seems older than that.  Help!

UPDATE:  This sticker is from WRVQ - Richmond, Virginia circa 1986.  The definition of a heritage CHR, Q94 has carried the same format since 1972.  Thanks Dan (and Phil)!

Radio Slovakia International

Radio Slovakia International is that country's official international broadcaster.  Their programs are in English, Russian, Spanish, French, German and, of course, Slovak.  On January 1, 2011 RSI ceased broadcasting on shortwave but can still be heard via satellite and internet.

The JAM Song - WPLJ

JAM Productions has been creating jingles for radio, television and commercials from their headquarters in Dallas, Texas since 1974.  In 1985, JAM created a song consisting of dozens of station jingles and pressed it as a "promo-only" record which was sent out to their clients.  The entire station list was printed on the back of the record jacket, a link to which can be found here.  The video above has some incorrect logos but overall it's an entertaining radio jingle time capsule.

The first station mentioned in the JAM Song is WPLJ in New York, New York.  They were an Album Oriented Rock station throughout the 1970s and early 80s but carried a Top-40 format at the time the JAM jingle was current.  They are now a Hot Adult Contemporary station.
WPLJ's call letters were named after Frank Zappa's cover of the Four Deuces song "WPLJ" from 1955 and stand for White Port and Lemon Juice.

WXOX

WXOX "101.7 The Spot" broadcast a Modern Rock format for a year or two in the late 1990s.  Located midway between Buffalo and Rochester and licensed to Attica, New York, their weak signal failed to impact either market and the station was sold to Holy Family Communications in 1999.  101.7 FM currently carries a Catholic Religious format as WLOF, now licensed to Elma, NY.

WHLB

The 1980 Broadcasting Yearbook lists WHLB (W Head of the Lakes Broadcasting) as having a Middle-of-the-Road format...and at least a little polka too.  It was licensed to Virginia, Minnesota in the northeastern part of the state known as the Iron Range because of its vast deposits of iron ore.  No stations are currently licensed to Virginia, MN and it's unclear what became of the signals at 107.1 FM and 1400 AM.

CFXX

Somebody wrote "CKFX" on the back of this sticker but I think the actual call letters were CFXX licensed to Windsor, Ontario.  "The Fox" was a Top-40 station circa 1984 that only broadcast for two hours in morning drive and from 5-7 PM on weekday evenings.  I'm not sure what was played the remaining 20 hours of the day.  The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) would not approve more than four hours a day of Top-40 music and the format died before it was fully implemented.  This Billboard magazine article says that the "CRTC's rigid guidelines, including the banning of top-40 on FM" led to the selling of the station.
93.9 FM is currently Adult Album Alternative CIDR "The River."
