Alaska Day 1 - KHAR

Today we packed up the radio sticker suitcase and flew from Dayton to Dallas to Anchorage to begin our Alaska land tour and cruise.  After a long day of travel it was nice to finally make it to our lodging for the night The Hotel Captain Cook.  After unwinding for a bit we decided to take a trolley tour of Anchorage to learn some of the history of the area much of which is centered around a devastating 9.2 magnitude megathrust earthquake which lasted over 4-and-a-half minutes.  We then headed to dinner at around 8PM which to our east coast bodies felt like midnight.

For the next 10 days or so I'll be posting radio stickers from Alaska--not necessarily from the exact location where we traveled but from somewhere in this giant state.

590 AM KHAR went on the air in Anchorage, Alaska in January 1961.

WIXX

101.1 FM WIXX flipped from Rock to Top-40 in 1977 and have been at or near the top of the ratings ever since.  Their 100,000-watt signal covers east/central Wisconsin including Green Bay, Oshkosh and Appleton.  WIXX is highly regarded by radio nerds (like me) not only for their success over many decades but because they are actually staffed on-air around the clock--a total rarity in the industry.  Supposedly their call letters were originally going to be WIZZ which made a humorous combination of "gee whiz" with their sister-station WGEE.  The WIZZ call letters were already taken to they went with WIXX instead.  I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure their logo hasn't changed since the late 70s.  Please WIXX, don't ever change.
