WXOX
WXOX "101.7 The Spot" broadcast a Modern Rock format for a year or two in the late 1990s. Located midway between Buffalo and Rochester and licensed to Attica, New York, their weak signal failed to impact either market and the station was sold to Holy Family Communications in 1999. 101.7 FM currently carries a Catholic Religious format as WLOF, now licensed to Elma, NY.

WHLB
The 1980 Broadcasting Yearbook lists WHLB (W Head of the Lakes Broadcasting) as having a Middle-of-the-Road format...and at least a little polka too. It was licensed to Virginia, Minnesota in the northeastern part of the state known as the Iron Range because of its vast deposits of iron ore. No stations are currently licensed to Virginia, MN and it's unclear what became of the signals at 107.1 FM and 1400 AM.

CFXX
Somebody wrote "CKFX" on the back of this sticker but I think the actual call letters were CFXX licensed to Windsor, Ontario. "The Fox" was a Top-40 station circa 1984 that only broadcast for two hours in morning drive and from 5-7 PM on weekday evenings. I'm not sure what was played the remaining 20 hours of the day. The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) would not approve more than four hours a day of Top-40 music and the format died before it was fully implemented. This Billboard magazine article says that the "CRTC's rigid guidelines, including the banning of top-40 on FM" led to the selling of the station.
93.9 FM is currently Adult Album Alternative CIDR "The River."

WBEN & The Whammy
This past Christmas my brother gave me a really cool book which details the history of my favorite football team from its inception up to their 50th anniversary in 2009. It's called the Buffalo Bills Football Vault and is filled with great photos along with reproductions of various Bills-related memorabilia including ticket stubs, bumper stickers, schedules, team newsletters, trading cards, posters and much more.
The one item that brought back the most memories was a hex-wielding "Whammy" which was a "two sided, hand-held buffalo symbol possessing supernatural powers, used to cheer on the home team with one side and doom the opposition to defeat with the other side." They were available only at Bells grocery stores and had the station logo from WBEN radio who were apparently sponsors of the promotion. "Newsradio 930" WBEN is a News/Talk station in Buffalo, NY.
Anyone who lived in western New York in the early 1980s remembers the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce's "Talking Proud" campaign whose song will be forever burned in my brain.

Yesterday's mailbox contained a package of radio promotional stuff courtesy of Luke in Amarillo, Texas. Stickers, pens, magnets, koozies, notepads, lip balm and even a pair of sunglasses were all included in the giant envelope. Thanks Luke!!

96.5 "Bob FM" WFLB is a Variety Hits station licensed to Laurinburg, North Carolina. They flipped to this format in 2011 after a run at Classic Hits as "96.5 The Drive."
